One of the first collections that most children create is of their favorite comic books. And as we get older we may want to continue that collection, expanding it into an investment hopefully to bear fruit in the future. But how can you, a relatively new collector, know what to look for when considering adding a new comic to your collection? And when you're dealing with the Golden Age of comic books and potentially hundreds of dollars to be invested or lost how can you protect yourself from fraud?
First let's review exactly what the Golden Age is and what sort of products you can expect to find on sale. For most comic book collectors the era known as the Golden Age starts in 1933 and goes until 1955, give or take a few years either way. This was when such classic comics as Action Comics appeared on the scene, with a new character known as Superman charging onto the covers. In fact, that very first issue in supermint condition can be sold for over two hundred thousand dollars! So you can see why it's in your best interest to research the market before you purchase any books.
As well, you may want to limit your collection to only one character or comic book line. Detective Comics introduced a rather interesting character in their May 1939 issue ¨C a dark detective known as the Batman! But this wasn't their first issue; it was actually their seventeenth. So you should decide if you want to collect just the comic appearances of Batman or if you want to collect the entire line, no matter who appears in it or not.
Unfortunately there are a number of frauds out there in any collectible market; people who will make up copies and then try to age them in order to take money from unsuspecting customers who think they're getting a great deal. When dealing with comic books you have the same problem, but you can circumvent this by dealing only with an established collector with a good track record.
Your first purchase should be of a price guide in order to establish a guideline for what you should expect to pay and be paid for your comic books. As with any collectible if it seems like a deal that's too good to be true ¨C it just might be. Consult your guide to see what sort of prices you should be expecting to find.
Purchase only from certified experts in the field who have reputations of being honest and fair. For example, the Action comic we mentioned above is extremely rare. If you come across a dealer who claims to have a dozen or more of them on hand, be very suspicious. Consult other clients of the dealer and see if they have any complaints or compliments about the prices as well as the quality. The price of a collectible comic will vary due to the condition of the comic. Since Action Comics was printed in the 1930's it's very unlikely that a copy would survive in mint condition to the present day unless it were in a very unique environment.
Since the Golden Age of comics ended in the 1950's there is also very few of them around due to the recycling theme that existed during the Second World War. All paper was considered to be a valuable asset to the war effort, and many issues went from the newsstand to being read to the recycling bin. This means that not many comics survived to become literally Golden!
Online auction sites such as eBay have become popular places to buy and sell comic books, including those as rare as the Golden Age ones. You can find some great deals here, but as usual research the dealer before you hand over the cash. Check out the feedback and see if you can get some sort of verification of the comic in question, hopefully from a third party who can certify the comic as to the condition.
Collecting comic books can be a fun and entertaining hobby, but collecting Golden Age comics can be an expensive investment for the best of us. And who wouldn't like to hold the first appearance of Batman in their hands! But be sure to do your homework and make sure that your investment is a golden addition instead of a cheap plastic dud!
