As I was growing up, I went through a phase, as most children do, where I begged and pleaded for a pet...any pet. When my parents finally caved in and said we could get one, I imagined taking walks with my new puppy or having a cat sleeping at the end of my bed every night. Much to my surprise, my father came home one Friday evening with a small box. This was not the pet I imagined. Where was my dog? My cat? Inside that box, however, was a small hamster who I fell in love with instantly. His name was Elroy and he became a part of our family immediately. Just because they¡¯re small, doesn¡¯t mean a hamster gets loved any less. If you have a friend or family member who has one of these furry and adorable creatures as a pet, here are some fun Christmas gift ideas.
When I had Elroy over twenty years ago, the best cage you could hope for was a wire or plastic cage that had a door that shut tightly. Nowadays, the cages made for hamster are equivalent to the human houses you see on MTV¡¯s ¡°Cribs.¡± Some cages have three levels or more with tubes and stairs and wheels and slides. Fortunately, these cages can be bought inexpensively, so why not pamper your furry pet with one of these decked out habitats? If there already exists a habitat, you can easily buy accessories for it, like extra tubes or additional levels.
While multi-level habitats are luxurious and nice, all hamsters love the simplicity of an exercise wheel in their cage to spin around in at all hours of the night. These wheels, usually made of plastic, fit nicely in the cage and give your hamster a chance to run off those extra peanuts you have been feeding him. If the cage is not large enough to house one of these exercise wheels, or if the hamster already has one, you can purchase an exercise ball for the hamster to roll in outside his cage. Talk about hours of fun for the hamster and his owners.
The hamster¡¯s natural habitat is underground, where it leads a nocturnal life. Because of this, a hamster will mostly sleep during the day, only to emerge at night where he will keep the entire house awake with his constant exercising. Invest in a natural and roomy ¡°house¡± to keep inside the hamster¡¯s habitat. This will help the hamster to be comfortable and feel secure during the day when he is sleeping and building his energy. Ask your local pet store what hamster house will work best for your particular size and type of hamster.
Hamster love to eat and one of their favorite treats is a honey-flavored compressed bar treat that can be easily hung in a hamster¡¯s cage. The hamster will gnaw and eat off of this bar for quite a while. They come in different flavors and some even include dehydrated vegetables to help the hamster with his nutritional requirements. |
