The first thing to remember when you walk into a casino is that the main goal is to take your money. The odds are always going to be for the House or the casino, and therefore you should not be counting on winning. Gambling is purely for entertainment purposes, much like going to see a movie or entering an amusement park. So when you decide how much money to take with you keep in mind that it's more than likely that you'll lose it all and mark it up to the cost of indulging in an exciting and fun run at the tables.

Many casinos have two basic sets of gambling set up, slot and video machines and what are referred to as table games. Craps, blackjack and roulette are just a few of the table games that you will see. These two sets require different approaches for the novice gambler - the least of which is where and how to use coin money versus casino chips.

Almost every slot and video poker machine will take coins, be they nickels, quarters or dollar tokens. At the back of every casino you will find a special area that will be glad to cash in your paper money for coins of every denomination, as long as it's playable in a machine. Most casinos have small carts that will cruise back and forth along the aisles, waiting to help you out without you leaving your seat or machine. There is no fee for changing your money from paper to coins either via the "cage" at the back of the casino or by using the carts or even a change machine discreetly placed on the wall.

Video poker machines play much the same way as you would play regular poker, with buttons set up to allow you to declare which cards you wish to keep and which ones you wish to toss back. Slot machines are based on the idea of matching up similar images in a variety of sequences, all of which will be listed on the front of the machine in a chart as well as what sequences pay which amounts. Both these machines will drop coins or tokens into a bin at the bottom of the machine for you to collect. However, if you do win a very large amount of money the machine will instead alert the casino host who will come over and give you the money personally instead of having the machine deal you out a thousand quarters or another high number of bulky coins. In both cases you can return to the cashier at the back of the resort to turn your tokens or coins into paper money for easier transportation.

But when you approach the table games you will need to change your money into casino chips. This is because of the need to make it easy for both you, the gambler and the dealer who will be running the game to see at a glance how much money is on the table. Each casino has special chips designed for use only in that resort, so you can't take chips from one casino to the other. You can go and cash out your chips at the cage and then take the money, but your chips must only be used within the boundaries of the resort. 

You can get chips at any gaming table simply by laying down your paper money and asking the dealer at an appropriate time what denomination you wish your chips to be in. This can vary from a single dollar chips to even hundreds of dollars, depending on how much money you wish to play. Also each chip will be a different color, allowing the dealer to know your specific chip from another players and allowing him/her to pay your winnings out quickly and fairly.

Many casinos offer beginner classes in all of their table games for new players. You can find a schedule either sitting on an empty table or by asking one of the casino employees. If you go to one of these classes you will be taught by one of the casino workers how the game works and how to bet properly and professionally to have a good time and keep the game rolling at a quick pace.

When you've had your fill of the tables and wish to "cash out" or leave the casino, you need to take your chips to the special cashier at the back of the casino. There the cashier will give you local currency equivalent to the amount of the chips back, without any charges. Be sure to be careful if you happen to have won a lot of money, there are always people watching and waiting for the opportunity to rob someone who has been more lucky than they have.
