The next time your family wants to take pictures or the relatives come over for a holiday celebration, plan a few less common poses that will provide laughter and fun for the future. Here are some ideas that everyone might enjoy:
1. Pose with a funny object. A balloon alien from the county fair or the oddball cap that you won as a prize will help to place the photo at a specific place or time when viewed later. A kite tangled in the front yard tree or your cat napping in a clothes basket may help viewers recall other events that occurred about the same time. When these objects are no longer part of your lives, the pictures will remain. How about one with everyone standing around Jim and his broken arm, their arms wrapped in dishtowels as comic slings?
2. Snap familiar places. A favorite coffeehouse, the school building and playground, the usual movie theater where family members go for the latest releases, and even the supermarket where you shop make heart-warming entries to the family photo album. When these places are long gone or drastically changed, you will have visual memories to help recall a special time in your lives when these places served a useful purpose.
3. Take pictures at work. Snapshots of your job area, coworkers, the work you do, and your supervisors can add to the hall of memories that will line your photo albums for years to come. Though your job may seem like drudgery now, it will mean more later to look back and reflect on the photos of your employer that supported your family.
4. Don't forget the pets. Take pictures of your dog playing with his toys or your cat up a tree. Get a shot of the gerbils on their treadmill or a snake wrapped around your arm. Friendly outdoor squirrels or the morning hummingbirds at their feeding trays can arouse warm memories when you look back in years to come. You might even take a few shots of the dog groomer's shop, your veterinarian, or the fairgrounds where your horse took second prize in the halter class.
5. Include the neighbors. The folks next door, Boy Scout leaders, favorite librarian or other public figure who means something to your family should join the hall of fame produced by your camera. A community pool or pavilion area, with friendly faces or waving hands, can reproduce a time when people shared outings to make lifetime bonds.
6. Give the kids a camera. Let them take pictures of the things that mean most to them. A closet full of toys, a favorite stuffed animal or camp shirt, or Grandma baking cookies might be the memory they want to preserve. Encourage them to identify people and dates on the back of the developed pictures.
Don't forget to organize your photo albums by dates or themes to sort memories and make the pictures easier to appreciate as the years roll by. Keep a camera handy to grab that unexpected shot that may turn up the next time the kids are having fun.
