TEAM SPIRIT POP-UP LAYOUT

Because cheerleaders are so full of pep and always jumping up, this pop-up page with elements jumping out at you really brings out the occasion. If you have never done a pop-up page layout, take your time and follow the steps carefully. You might want to practice making a pop-up feature on a piece of scrap paper to get the gist of it before tackling the project. The layout itself is not very difficult, once a scrapbooker has an idea of how pop-up pages work. 

This layout is best with an 8X8 album, but can work for a 12X12. 

YOU WILL NEED:

-Picture of your cheerleader jumping

-Another photo or two of cheerleaders or squad

-2 pictures featuring one pom-pom each (can be a double of the same photo)

-3 sheets of heavy cardstock (school or team colors)

-Pop up die-cut or template (or follow instructions below)

-Assorted sized die-cut or paper punched stars

-Die cut letters or alphabet stickers in coordinating colors

-Foam pop-up dots

Scissors or swivel-tip craft knife

Adhesives (glue sticks or photo mounting tape)

Pencil

For simplicities sake, we¡¯ll use these labels for your color choices:

color A = dominant team color (two sheets of cardstock)

color B = background team color (1 sheet of cardstock)

color C = coordinating colors (for letters and page elements, that coordinates with, but is different than, team colors)

Take a sheet of cardstock in color A and use a die cut machine or template to make a pop-up cut in the center. If you don¡¯t have these die cuts or templates, simply fold the page neatly and evenly in half, so that the corners meet. Hold the edge with the fold toward you, horizontally.  Take your ruler and make two vertical lines in the center of the page, coming up from the folded edge. They should be approximately 1" long, and be spaced ?¡± to 3/4" apart. Use your scissors or craft knife to cut along these lines, going through the folded paper. When you unfold the paper, it should have two vertical slits in the center that cross over the fold line. Put your finger behind the paper and gently push the strip between the vertical lines, so that as you fold the paper again, the strip comes forward. When the paper is folded, you should now have a rectangular notch in the center. When you unfold the paper like a greeting card, there should be an upside-down ¡°L¡± shape protruding forward. This is your pop-up feature. 

Take the photos of the cheerleaders and the squad, matte them on color A paper. If you like, embellish with a double-matte in color C, use fancy edge cutters or any embellishments you may like. The only thing to keep in mind is that the matted photos should not be larger than ? the page.   

Take a sheet of cardstock in color B. Lay it flat on the table before you. Take your folded pop-up cardstock (color A) and place it over color B cardstock, on the bottom half of the paper. Be sure that the corners all meet, and the folded edge runs across the middle of the page. Make sure your pop-up feature is pushed inward, leaving the notch.

Take your glue or double-sided mounting tape and adhere the folded color A cardstock to the bottom half of color B cardstock.

On the top half of the color B cardstock, add your matted photos. On the bottom half, on the folded side that faces out, use your color C letters to spell the words ¡°WE¡¯VE GOT...¡± across the page. 

Cut out the photo of your cheerleader jumping; crop it closely around the contour of her body. Basically, cut away anything that isn¡¯t cheerleader. Cut out the photos of the pom-poms. Crop them closely as well, so you have two separate pom-poms.

Take the edge of the folded paper (color A) and pull it up, opening it like a horizontal greeting card. Place your cheerleader in the center, adhered to the pop-up feature with glue or mounting tape. She should be placed so that when the page is folded down, she lies flat on her ¡°face¡± inside, but when opened, she is pulled up and protrudes on the page.  

Take two foam pop-up dots, and adhere them to the center back of each pom-pom cut-out. Use the letters in color C to spell the words ¡°TEAM SPIRIT!¡± Place them inside, around or below the cheerleader.

Use die cut or paper punched stars, or other types of embellishments to finish off the page (both on the top and the inside). Remember, elements in varied sizes grouped in threes or fives are most visually appealing. 

Your result will be a two-tone page that opens to reveal your cheerleader and her pom-poms popping out at you.

THE CHEERLEADER PYRAMID

This is a very simple layout based on the famous human pyramid that cheerleaders make. It can be used to feature all of your child¡¯s friends, or the entire squad. 

YOU WILL NEED:

-Two sheets of cardstock, each in a team color

-Stickers or letters in one of the team colors

-A head shot of each cheerleader (the more you will be putting on the page, the smaller they need to be)

-A diamond or oval template

-Scissors or craft knife

-Glue or photo mounting tape

-Cheerleading embellishments (see below)

-pencil

Begin by counting how many photos you want to feature. Six is a good number, because it is easy to make a pyramid with and also leaves the photos large enough to really show off the cheerleaders.

Figure out how you are going to arrange your pyramid. If you have six, they you know you can put three across the bottom, two in the center row, and one on top. Three, six and ten make the best pyramids. If you have another number of photos to display, you are going to have to figure out how you are going to lay them creatively and still maintain the pyramid shape. Cut out small pieces of scrap paper using your template and lay them out on the page, experimenting with their arrangement until you are satisfied.

Use a pencil to mark the spots. Take your template, which should be just large enough to accommodate the cheerleader¡¯s face. Use it to cut out the spots you have marked on the page. 

Take your second sheet of cardstock in the other team color. Place it under the first sheet. Use a pencil to mark the shapes you have cut out. Cut out the shapes from the second sheet, slightly larger (1/16 of an inch) than the first. Now, place the second sheet over the first. You should have a small ¡°frame¡± of the first color within the cut-outs of the second page color. Attach these sheets with a glue stick or photo-mounting tape.

Take your photos and place your cut-out paper over them, to frame the cheerleader¡¯s face. Start at the bottom. Glue the bottom row of cheerleaders into their spaces. Trim the tops of their photos if they overlap the next row of cut-outs. Put in the next row, repeating the process. Work your way up to the top of the pyramid. 

When all your photos are in place, you can use your die cut or sticker letters to spell out a caption, such as, ¡°We¡¯ve Got Spirit!¡± You can also add any embellishments you choose to further decorate the page.
