Within 72 hours of acquiring a new puppy, he should be taken in for a first well-check visit with a veterinarian. If he shows any signs of illness then he needs to be taken as soon as possible. A puppy gotten from a reputable breeder will probably come with a health guarantee.

At the veterinarian visit, the doctor will perform several types of exams. The first action he will do is a physical check. The nose should be cool and moist with no discharge. A runny nose or frequent sneezing can be a symptom of a respiratory infection. The mouth and teeth are examined for bad breath or pale gums. The throat is checked for enlarged tonsils. Ears are checked for ear mites and infections. The ears should conform to the standards for the breed if it is a pure breed of dog. Eyes and eyelids should be clear with no indications of trauma or eyelash problems.

The most common and important vaccination for your puppy at this first visit is the DHPP or 'four in one' shot. This combination shot covers canine distemper, canine hepatitis virus, parainfluenza and the parvovirus. Canine distemper is a contagious disease with a high fatality rate. The virus affects the neurological system, starting with mild twitching or shivering. The canine hepatitis virus is also highly contagious and spread by saliva, urine or feces. The virus affects the abdominal organs and starts out as an increased body temperature and discharges. The parainfluenza virus is part of the issue of kennel cough. It is transmitted by nose-to-nose contact or sharing dishes. A dry, hacking cough and eye discharge are early symptoms. The parvovirus is a very contagious viral disease that when first reported killed a large number of dogs. It is spread mainly through feces contact but many other ways exist for transmission. Symptoms include vomiting, bloody diarrhea, lethargy and lack of appetite. Another recommended shot is for bordetella, which is a bacterial part of kennel cough.

There are laboratory tests performed at the early checkups for various worms and internal parasites. Round worms and hookworms are very common in puppies. Typically, the veterinarian will administer a dose of de-worming medication even without any fecal tests. Heartworm prevention is started at this time too. Heartworm testing is unnecessary for puppies under 6 months of age.

Female puppies should be spayed when they reach four months old. This surgery not only helps to prevent unwanted animals but also protects against breast and uterine cancers. Male puppies should be castrated at four months old. Behavior issues as well as diseases of the reproductive system can be prevented.

At a later visit, a rabies shot will be administered. Rabies is a virus that affects the brain and is fatal. All states have laws requiring rabies vaccinations for dogs since many small wild animals carry the disease and humans can catch it.

Have an area ready for the puppy with clean food and water bowls, some toys and a crate if you will be using one. The veterinarian should be able to give recommendations on local obedience classes.
