Kite flying has been around as a recreational activity for centuries, and the timeless fun and enjoyment of flying a kite can create lasting memories for your family.  If you have the opportunity to attend a kite festival, jump on it!  Kite festivals are excellent events that foster creativity, family bonding and good old-fashioned fun.  Plus, you can get a kite for under $10, or you can even make your own.  If you take on the challenge of making your own kites for a kite festival, this activity can serve as a perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with your kids.  If you aren¡¯t up to the task of making your own kite, you could buy a very simple kite and decorate it to make it uniquely yours.  

To find out about kite festivals in your community, look in the newspaper or make a phone call to your local county department of recreation and tourism.  If you find that there aren¡¯t any kite festivals scheduled, think about organizing one yourself, either through a community group or through your child¡¯s school.  Really, they are simple to organize as long as you can find a field that has enough space for a group of kite flyers.  If the location has picnic tables, that¡¯s even better.  If there aren¡¯t picnic tables, don¡¯t worry about that; just tell people to bring blankets for traditional on-the-grass picnicking.  If you would like to organize a kite festival as a fundraising event, incorporate a bake sale or a submarine sandwich sale, along with some lemonade and beverage stands.  You could even have local groups of boy scouts or girl scouts, or any other community group that is interested in getting involved make kites to sell at the festival.  Other ways to fundraise at a kite festival are by incorporating face painting booths, raffles, or auctions into the event.    

Across the country, there are many annual kite festivals that are worth checking out, especially if you are a kite enthusiast.  These festivals attract many avid kite flyers and you are likely to see some very elaborate kites, both homemade and expensively purchased.  There really is a subculture of people who follow these festivals, and they are always ready to put on a fantastic kite show like nothing you are likely to find at a local festival.  One of the best annual festivals is the Smithsonian Kite Festival, which has taken place every spring for about forty years.  The festival is full of competitions; they give out awards for stand-out child kite flyers, adult kite makers, adult kite flyers, kite tricks, and much more.  Another fabulous kite festival is the Washington State International Kite Festival, held in the summertime in Long Beach, Washington.  This festival has been around for over two decades, and this festival is actually a week-long event, and they have different themes for each day of the competition, such as a red, white, and blue kite day.  A family vacation that includes a kite festival is a great idea ¨C everyone will have a blast.  

Another reason that kite festivals are so fabulous is because they can be used as a learning opportunity for your child or children.  There are many opportunities to teach your children about both crafts and science in a fun and hands-on way.  If you are going to be making your own kites, you could take the opportunity to teach your child how to sew, either by hand or with a sewing machine.  You can also talk to them about Benjamin Franklin¡¯s famous kite flying experience.  If you have young children, they are likely to wonder how a kite works ¨C after all, it¡¯s only means of movement is the air and wind.  Round up your family, and go fly a kite.
