Adobe Acrobat is a computer program designed to make the distribution of files easier across different operating systems and platforms. As not all computer users have the same operating system, not all computer users have the same programs, and documents such as HTML can look different from platform to platform and computer to computer. Acrobat provides a solution to this problem by creating a document format that is close to an electronic piece of paper--so close that reviews on layout from co-workers on a newsletter can be easily checked, if wished.
Although programs can and have been developed that will open files made by one platform to run on another, these programs do not work across virtually all platforms, and it depends on the receiver of the file to have a program--often the full version of a program--to open the file. And yet another user, with an even different operating system, would possibly still have the same problem of opening the file. And then, even within the same platform, not all computers have the same software. So, what to do?
Adobe Acrobat allows the use of its own PDF (Portable Document Format) files. As the name PDF hints at, PDF files are made to be portable and easily distributable. PDF files are based on the Adobe PostScript language. They can retain graphics, fonts, and even contain hypertext links to websites and other parts of the document. Acrobat takes into consideration any differences between platforms and fixes them so that when viewed, they look as the author of the document intended.
What Adobe Acrobat allows is for anyone with Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader--no matter their operating system--to open and view the files in the same manner as any other user, no matter the platform. And Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for free download, which means to read the files, you don't even need the full version of Acrobat. Adobe Acrobat Reader also allows the viewed files to be saved and printed.
This means files can be distributed to a much larger audience than if audience size had to depend on all users having the full version of any given program. Since the documents appear the same across all platforms, one can view documents saved on your computer, those online, and even print them out and keep the same appearance. And since Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free for download, if a user doesn't already have it, they can just download it and then they will be able to view PDF files from then on.
The full version allows users to convert files to PDF files for distribution. You can easily convert from another electronic format, a paper document, or even a web page. Once converted, your files can be distributed to co-workers, friends, and just about anyone in the world. The full version also allows you to assign different levels of authorization to your PDF documents. You can use Acrobat to create brochures, presentations, and even e-books and get them ready for distribution. |
