Winter is here, and for the fashion forward, that means you have to start getting really creative to keep warm while staying stylish. Wearing legwarmers over your jeans or tights (if you¡¯re wearing a skirt) is a good way to keep extra warm. On top of that, legwarmers are back in the spotlight, featured in many designers¡¯ collections for this winter and on sale at lots of popular stores. Did you know, though, that there are several different ways to make your own? All are really easy, some require sewing, and others don¡¯t. Here are some ideas.

Sweatpants make perfect no-sew legwarmers. All you have to do is buy a pair in a color you like, and cut off the legs somewhere above the knee. I do mine almost to the end of the inseam, because my preference is for longer legwarmers. You can certainly decide for yourself. It¡¯s that simple, because sweatpants do not need to be hemmed. Just flip them over and put them on, cuff first. Your look is complete, and it only took five minutes!

Another option is to make legwarmers out of the arms of a sweatshirt. This works nearly exactly the same way, but makes much smaller, less baggy legwarmers. 

There are other items of clothing that lend themselves beautifully to the creation of legwarmers: make them from the arms of a sweater you don¡¯t want anymore, or one you got at a thrift store. Cutting a sweater can be tricky, and you¡¯ll probably need to hem the cut edge, to prevent the whole thing from unraveling. Thermal pants also make great legwarmers, and like the sweatpants, don¡¯t need to be hemmed. You can get thermals inexpensively at just about any large store like Wal-mart or Costco, or at most sporting goods stores. The best thing about thermals is that you can dye them different colors, and because they¡¯re made of waffle knit cotton, they just drink it up. You¡¯ll need a fabric dye like Rit (a popular brand available at most supermarkets and craft stores), and an aluminum stockpot that you aren¡¯t going to use for food any longer. Follow the directions on the package of dye, but to really make the color stay, you¡¯ll want to double the quantity of liquid dye (triple if you¡¯re using the powder), and boil for at least an hour or two longer than the directions instruct.

For the craftier reader, you should know that you can sew yourself a pair of legwarmers with little difficulty, and even without a pattern, out of fun fabrics like faux fur or shearling. For a natural look you can use the fur that looks like real animal fur, for a more adventurous look, you can try the fur that comes in neon colors, or with Mylar threads woven in for that glittery, rave look. You¡¯ll need to use a tape measure to figure out how much fabric you¡¯ll need, and how much elastic for the top and bottom cuffs. Once the pieces are measured and cut, working with the inside out, use your sewing machine or needle and thread to double over the top to make a pocket for the elastic band which will be your cuff, and sew that together before you sew the actual legwarmer together. Sew the fabric together, inside out, to make a tube, with the elastic cuff at the top. Once you are done sewing, turn it inside out and try it on.

If you¡¯re fortunate enough to know how to knit, then your options are even more expanded. You can search out an actual legwarmers pattern, or you can modify a man¡¯s sweater pattern quite easily to fit your needs. By making a sleeve, but fitting it with two cuffs instead of attaching it to the body of a sweater, you have easily made your own legwarmers.
