If you have a school-aged son or daughter, you may have already been lucky enough to experience the wonderful event called sleepover! You probably greeted the next morning with circles under your eyes as you tiptoed around several sleeping children. The quiet only lasted for a moment before one by one each of these angels awoke, hungry and ready to play some more. 

Sleepovers are typically a rite of passage for most young people, and while they are certainly loads of fun, they can be exhausting as well. Of course, you can let your child and his friends entertain themselves until they fall to the floor in an exhausted slumber, but why not plan an activity to enhance the sleepover fun? 

There are several different themes that you can choose from when hosting a sleepover party. Many of them will be geared towards the specific gender of the children your child invites. Some of them will work for both boys and girls. Of course, the main idea behind any theme, though, is to have some safe and entertaining fun. 

What girl doesn¡¯t love to play dress-up? You can provide your daughter and her friends hours of fun by letting them have a dress-up party. Ask each child to bring dress-up clothes and accessories, such as hats, shoes, purses, scarves, etc. You might want to raid your own closet for items that you no longer use and throw these into the pile. You can even search through thrift stores for more extravagant items at cheap prices, such as feather boas, sequined jackets, and furry hats. After you have placed all of the items in a box or on the floor, let each of the girls search through them to create her own individual outfit. As an added plus, you might want to give each girl a disposable camera, so that they can take pictures of each other.

Another fun sleepover party idea for girls is a makeover night. This is probably more appropriate for middle school aged girls. Let each girl bring some makeup, nail polish, and even glitter tattoos. You can often find inexpensive makeup and glitter at discount stores, and these would be great favors to give to each girl. Once they¡¯ve completed their makeovers on themselves or each other, give them a disposable camera to take pictures, too. 

Your son and his friends might enjoy a backyard campout. You could build a small fire to roast marshmallows and hot dogs. (Make sure the fire is completely out when you are finished, however.) The boys could play flashlight tag and catch lightening bugs in plastic jars. If they are brave enough, you could even let them tell each other ghost stories, but don¡¯t be surprised if you have to stay in the tent with them later on!

For middle school boys, why not let them have a video marathon sleepover. Several boys can be responsible for bringing video game systems, along with games. You may even need a few boys to bring small, portable televisions. Then, let the boys play video games, swapping games with each other, and competing against each other. 

Finally, how about planning an all-night gaming sleepover? You might want to start with a scavenger hunt. This can be done in the house or outside. Give each child a list of items to search for and have a few inexpensive prizes to hand to the winners. Next, you could play some traditional games, such as the limbo, blind man¡¯s bluff, and pin the tail. Of course, whatever you choose to let your child and his friends do, you probably already realize that there will not be a lot of sleep involved. As long as the kids have fun, however, what¡¯s a little sleep depravation? You can take a nap tomorrow!
