The thought of planning a long car trip with young children usually brings a shiver of dread to all participants involved! If the thought conjures up hours of driving accompanied by the screaming and whining of your kids you are not alone! However, you are also not doomed to such a fate. Believe it or not, long car trips with kids can be painless if they are planned well. So put away the sound blocking shooting ears, and get ready to make your upcoming trip fun.
Organization is a key factor when planning any trip, and is especially important when kids are involved. Before you even worry about the kids, make sure all the other details are in order. If you are stressed out and aggravated your kids will pick up on it and the mood for the trip will be unpleasant.
If you can, plan the bulk of your drive time for when your children will be asleep. If you can drive at night and let the children sleep you will completely eliminate the ¡®are we there yet¡¯ boredom syndrome! Pillows and blankets can be comfortably situated around car seats and seat belts so that the kids will remain safe, and comfortable. Travel size pillows are especially handy, and acquiring a special new pillow and blanket for the trip will add to the fun.
If you can¡¯t travel at night, then factor in lots of rest stops along your trip. You might as well face it; kids can¡¯t be pent up for hours on end! If you go ahead and plan for periodically stopping and letting the kids out to run you won¡¯t be worried about not making your trip in time. Allow for a lunch break at a fast food restaurant with a playground. Map out your trip well ahead of time and include a few stops at areas of interest you¡¯ll be passing on the way. This will allow you to see some of the country you are driving through, as well as breaking up the trip and making it more bearable for all of you!
Keeping the kids entertained is paramount! Rent or purchase a TV / VCR or DVD combo that is appropriate for the size of your vehicle (there are many on the market now that are sold specifically to be used in vehicles). Since there¡¯s little else to do, this is one time when letting your kids be vegetable in front of the TV isn¡¯t such a bad thing! Bring along numerous favorite video tapes or DVDs and let the kids watch as many movies as they can stand! A few new movies will be even more entertaining, which translates into more quiet time for the driver!
Let your kids bring along other electronic devises as well. Hand held video games and learning devices can provide hours of relatively quiet entertainment. Be sure to stock up on batteries and make sure that your kids bring all the games and various hardware needed. It is best if these devises are stored in their own carrying case to make clean up easy and to keep everything together to prevent loss.
Keep the troops fed! Packing a cooler full of snacks and drinks will allow you to handle snack attacks on the go without having to stop at convenience stores, as well as providing the kids with something to do.
Pack each child an ¡®entertainment bag¡¯. Fill a backpack or other bag with things you know your child will enjoy. This can include simple craft projects that can be done in the car, coloring books and crayons, books (if your child can read in the car without becoming carsick, if not, avoid books!), toys, etc. There are many fun games designed for car travel such as road side bingo, and other similar games where the object is to find things as you are driving.
Let the kids ride shotgun! Rotate out who gets to sit in the front passenger seat. Sometimes just a simple change of scenery at each fuel stop is enough to maintain everyone¡¯s sanity. It is also an opportunity for the child sitting up front to get away from other kids in the vehicle for a little while, which can diffuse boredom induced sibling fighting.
Let the kids navigate! Even younger children can often pick out landmarks and pay attention to city signs and various things along the trip. Older children can help read maps, keep track of miles, highway markers, etc. Letting the kids be involved will make the trip more interesting, and will also help them to understand that they really are getting closer to the end!
If you plan well, a long car trip can be as much fun as the destination! Even if most of the occupants of your vehicle are children. |
