Renting a new release for almost four dollars, you bring it home and slide it into the VCR. Turning on the television, you smile at your children's eager expressions. Then, as previews begin playing, you watch with concern as several scenes depict half-dressed adults in various stages of conflict or romance. Glancing nervously at the kids, you see their eager glances have changed to looks of confusion. Will the PG-rated film be any better than the previews, or will you have to stop it early, like you did the last few? 

Finding a fun and safe family video can be difficult. Many advertise general themes and popular actors, but in watching them, you find that the content is actually pretty questionable, especially for children under the age of twelve. 

If you're not sure what to look for in the video store or library shelves, the following genres might offer quality films to help you find worthwhile viewing material:

1. Historical events. Many of the best commercial films are based on actual or fabricated historical events. Disney movies like Pocahontas and Mulan feature female heroes who are loosely based on real women from long ago. Their cartoon format is generally safe, though not all cartoons are. Other historical themes include the fall of Asian dynasties, civil war clashes, and discovery or exploration of new cultures. Even G- or PG-rated films may include unsuitable elements, such as cursing or various states of undress, though often such scenes are depicted tastefully and realistically rather than spuriously. 

2. Adventure stories. From Dickens' Victorian London setting to Jack London's tales of the far north, many books for young readers have been adapted into exciting screenplays. Plots centered on horses or wildlife, races, the sea, wilderness, and civilizations present breathless challenges that inspire kids with the lead characters' heroism. 

3. Romance comedies. Most romance stories today are presented in a humorous vein, often in a suitable family format. Though some include brief language, suggestive actions, or questionable values, most project a healthy relationship lesson that many kids and parents will appreciate. Read the video jacket before renting to be sure the content is suitable for your children's ages.

4. Science fiction and fantasy. Tales of cosmic travel, rambling robots, and out of control villains or scientists provide adrenalin-pumping tension that will keep family viewers perched on the edge of their seats. Look for reviews of the films you want to rent, though, as some may include sexual or graphic elements that can disturb younger children. Avoid slasher films, which don't really do much for kids in general besides give them nightmares.

5. Biographies. Life stories of famous people can educate as well as entertain viewers. Prominent figures like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare, and a host of others come alive on the silver screen, introducing viewers of today with long-ago lives, cultures, and literature. While some famous people may not be suitable subjects of study for kids, like Nero, for example, others offer keen insight into fascinating lives and events. 

6. Animated films. We can all think of some award-winning films in recent years that seem to have been made with a view to making adults as well as children chuckle. Many by reputable film companies teach kids a positive message, but others may seem a little questionable. Find out what the film is about before showing it to the kids.

7. Classic movies. While not all old movies are good for every family member, many are safe for the whole family. Genres were limited and censorship was rife, keeping film entertainment lively if limited in action or theme. Have fun reflecting on the good old days as you take in the popular classics of decades past with the kids.

Whatever your taste, there is probably a film section for you at the video store. But exercise good judgment in making selections that will benefit and not mislead your family members.
