If you've run out of ideas for fun family activities, consider making and playing with finger puppets. Making finger puppets can be an inexpensive and simple activity for the entire family. Besides the hours of fun you can enjoy together creating puppets, the entire family can create stages and scenery for playtime afterwards. All you'll need are a few basic craft materials and a little imagination. In just a few easy steps, kids of almost any age can make themselves more puppets than they have fingers, in practically no time. With a family who enjoys craft projects, it doesn't hurt to keep a few things on hand, for those times when boredom sets in. When making finger puppets, the following suggested materials are a good place to start, though, anything can work. The family can decide together what things might be good for decorating, depending on their own ideas.
Finger Puppet Materials
felt pieces in a variety of colors
tape, craft glue, or hot glue gun
markers or paint
large popsicle sticks
needle and thread
colored paper
accessory items like yarn, cotton balls, google eyes, glitter, ribbon, sequins etc...
shoe boxes, cardboard boxes, or other cardboard material
Finger Puppet Body Basics
There are two ways to make a basic finger puppet body; both are relatively simple to do. The length of time that the puppets are desired to last will probably dictate which method is used to make them. Age can be another factor in deciding which route to take. Bear in mind, the end result will be similar, regardless of which type of puppet you decide to go with.
For the simplest finger puppet body, take a large rectangular piece of felt and size it to fit the finger. Wrap the felt piece loosely around a large popsicle stick, secured with a small piece of tape to hold it in place, or, put the felt piece flat on the work surface, whichever is easiest for you. Fold the two sides of the felt towards the middle, meeting in the center. Use a needle and thread, glue, or a piece of tape to hold the edges together. After that, it's finished and ready for decorating.
Another method for making the puppet body involves sewing two square or rectangular pieces of felt together. The shape of the felt pieces will depend on how you want the puppet to fit the finger when completed. Make sure to size the felt pieces before hand, to ensure a good fit when finished. Each piece of felt represents half of a finger puppet, so the pair needs to be equal in size and shape. Match the pieces together and stitch around the edges, joining the halves. Leave an opening at the bottom for the finger to fit through and it's done. Turn the finished product inside out to neaten up the appearance a bit. This will round out the top some, as well as hide the look of the stitching. Now it's ready to decorate.
Decorating Basics
Regardless of which type you make, you can decorate your finger puppets using any of the suggested items from the list, or other materials of your choosing. Be creative! There are endless choices available around the house and at local craft stores. Even the grocery store can be a good place to find items for decorating your finger puppets. The more stuff you have to choose from, the better your puppets will turn out.
People are easy to create, with a little help from the materials you have ready. Markers or paint can make quick work of facial features, or small pieces of paper or felt. Imagination is the key to making your puppets looks how you expect. Experiment with different things to see what you like best. With a bit of yarn, a marker, some spare fabric, and a couple of rubber bands; your puppet body becomes a pretty little girl with yellow ponytails.
Animals can be fun to make too, and just as easy with the right materials on hand. Make a few sets of differently shaped ears and you're ready to make a multitude of different animals. Long pointy ears, cut from construction paper, can turn a puppet body into a cute little bunny. Add a bit of cotton ball and two buck teeth, also cut from paper, and he's ready for hopping. Switch to large round ears, a piece of yarn, and some paper strips to turn your rabbit into a whisker twitching mouse.
Once you get started, the possibilities are only limited by what you can think up. Not only is it fun to make the puppets, but you can make stages and scenery as well. Before you know it, you'll have everything you need to put on a great puppet show. Making everything is only half of the fun, though. Playing with your finger puppets afterwards might actually be the best part.
