Is a lizard the right pet for you?  Familiarize yourself with the basic care requirements of a pet lizard before you make that decision.

1) Lizards easily captivate the attention of their owner¡¯s, especially if the owner is a child. But lizards are not particularly well suited to be pets for children because they generally do not appreciate being handled.  A person looking to own a pet that they can hold, stroke, pet, and cuddle, should not consider owning a lizard.  

2) Lizards can be costly pets.  Most of the lizards commonly sold in pet stores have very particular needs when it comes to habitat.  Often these lizards need to live in either a tropical or subtropical climate.  These climate conditions are simulated and sustained in climate-controlled terrariums which require costly equipment and regular maintenance.  The cost is, of course, greater when the owner must buy a terrarium that is size appropriate for a large lizard.  

3) A person looking to own a pet that is low maintenance might enjoy a lizard in the sense that it does not need to be walked, trained, groomed, or cuddled or handled in any way.  However, lizards that are active mainly at night are so low-maintenance that they don¡¯t make engaging subjects to watch during the day.  A nocturnal lizard might also create quite a racket when its owner is trying to sleep.  To avoid the irritation of missing sleep over a lizard, find the nocturnal lizard a room other than the bedroom.  Or, consider purchasing a lizard that is active during the day and sleeps at night.  This type of lizard will also make a more interesting pet, as the owner will be awake to watch it in action.

4) Different types of lizards require vastly different types of diets.  Make it a point to know the nutritional needs of the type of lizard you might be considering owning before making a decision.  Many types of lizards eat strictly vegetation, leaves, fruits and vegetables, flowers and so on.  Other lizards eat both vegetation and meat.  If you are not the type of person who would delight in handling insects, spiders, and mice, be sure to purchase a lizard whose diet does not mainly consist of those items.  There are even some lizard varieties that eat other lizards.  Consider the gross factor as well as the expense of a lizard¡¯s diet before making a decision.  Some lizards don¡¯t need to be fed more than three times per week, making them suitable pets for an owner who frequently travels.  

5) Lizards cover a wide range of sizes, starting from just a few inches long and reaching all the way up to nearly 3 feet in length. Geckos are usually among the smallest lizards commonly available in pet stores.  Water dragons can reach over 30 inches in length.  Generally, the longer a lizard is, the larger his terrarium needs to be in order to properly accommodate him.  Some small lizards, however, are extremely active compared to larger lizards, and they require a bigger living space to provide them with adequate room to roam.
