One of the deadliest forces of nature is the hurricane, and those who have never experienced one are cautioned not to take the effects of this potential killer lightly. A tempest such as this shouldn*t be relegated to the status of a ※lesser storm§ when compared with a cyclone, because the destructive power is quite similar 每 but the arena of devastation is far larger when brought about by a storm of this type, since the gale-force winds aren*t sculpted into the shape of a funnel, but are widespread and riotous.
If a hurricane is targeted for your area, you*ll first receive a Hurricane Watch 每 which means that the storm is expected within the next 36 hours. Once this alert has been broadcast, it*s time to bring in any loose objects from the outdoors and secure those items which can*t be brought in. Many people also cover their windows with boards or other protective materials. When the time has diminished to 24 hours or less and the storm is still anticipated for your region, this will be upgraded to a Hurricane Warning. Once that designation has been assigned, you*ll need to start watching the skies and be aware of any changes in the atmosphere. It*s important to remember that, in order to be classified as a hurricane, a storm must have sustained winds of at least 74 mph, the onset of which may appear to be quite sudden.
Since the nature of a hurricane is to begin at sea and move toward land, coastal dwellers can expect to be affected before those living inland. They are also at greater risk, since those living along the coast will also be victimized by the devastation of storm surges. These surges (violent oceanic waves hitting the shoreline) require evacuation of the area prior to the hurricane*s arrival in order to avoid the loss of life. Refusal to evacuate would be an exercise in foolishness, since many lives are lost under such conditions.
The first indication of the storm*s approach is the darkening sky. Now is the time to retreat to an underground storm shelter, if one is available, because hurricane winds can sometimes rip into the area very quickly. If such a shelter is not at hand, it*s critical to stay indoors (be sure to bring in any outdoor pets), gathering everyone into a more protected area, such as a basement. You*ll want to have prepared for this prior to the storm, by supplying yourself with necessities such as bottled water, prepared foods, flashlights and other tools, including blankets, radio and cell phone or other communication device.
As it continues to darken, light winds will begin, increasing in strength as the full fury of the storm approaches. At this point, trees and other greenery will begin to sway and, perhaps, scratch at nearby windows, as light rains begin to fall. This is the first dangerous stage, since folks will sometimes be lulled into a false sense of security if this phase of the storm lasts for any great length of time. You*ll need to resist the temptation to wander upstairs or out-of-doors, since you*ll be leaving yourself unprotected when the storm truly unleashes. From this point forward, it*s critical to stay away from any windows (even at the basement level). The force of the increasing wind and objects that may become airborne can cause glass breakage 每 very dangerous for those who are in the near vicinity.
Soon afterward, torrential rains will hit the area, accompanied by screaming winds. These gales will typically tear branches from trees and hurl unsecured objects through the air. Loose shingling will be torn from rooftops, power lines will fall and outdoor animals are in grave danger of being hit by flying objects or slammed into trees, houses, telephone poles and other stationary objects. Bodies of water will begin to surge, causing flooding and water damage in the immediate area. Though the noise will be terrific, this is not yet the pinnacle of the storm.
The ferocity will continue to build as the eye - or calm, still center - of the hurricane approaches. The deadliest and most destructive portion of the storm is just before the eye has been reached. This narrow band is known as the ※eyewall§ and is the most destructive element of the storm. It is at this point that houses may be shaken from their very foundations, vehicles may be overturned and buildings may be leveled. The degree of devastation will be dependent upon the magnitude of the storm (rated on a level of 1 to 5).
Category 1 hurricanes are considered to be the weakest among the storms, with wind speeds ranging from 74 to 95 mph. Those in Category 2 will produce winds from 96 to 110 mph, while Category 3 brings wind speeds of 111 to 130 mph. The worst storms 每 Categories 4 and 5 每 have sustained winds of 131 to 155 and greater than 155, respectively. Certainly, those that reach the level of Category 5 are much more devastating than those of a lower rating. It*s important to keep apprised of the storm*s rating prior to its onset, in order to fully prepare for its onslaught.
Once through the eyewall, you*ll be contained within the eye of the hurricane. This can last for anywhere from a minute or two to several minutes, depending upon the area of the storm itself. This is another very dangerous stage. It*s during this time that many folks are fooled into believing that the storm has abated and that it*s safe to return to the ground level. Many tragedies have taken place as a result of this type of mistake. The best plan of action is to wait it out. This phase will eventually pass, and the other side of the eyewall will return, wreaking its deadly havoc above-ground once again.
From this point forward, the storm will, in effect, appear to be moving in reverse, as the devastating winds and slicing rains continue to decrease in force as the hurricane finally moves away from the area. Be sure that the danger is well past before returning to level ground. When you*re certain that the raging storm has passed and there are no obstructions, you and any others that may have been in your company may move upstairs to inspect any damage that may have been incurred. You*ll need to exercise extreme caution as you progress upward, in case any hazards are in your path, such as ruptured mains, severed electric lines or building materials from damage to the house.
It*s worth noting that, in addition to the physical effects of the storm, there may also be emotional wreckage due to feelings of intense fear that will naturally surface during the worst of the storm. Parents 每 or those who are in the company of children at the time 每 should expect intense emotions from youngsters during this phase, often to the point of sheer terror. You*ll need to prepare yourself for this prior to the storm and take necessary steps to comfort them, as well as physically protect them from the storm*s fury.
Having been through a number of hurricanes myself, I can tell you that the process is, at the very least, quite frightening. Under the worst of conditions, the storm can be a screaming nightmare 每 seemingly of apocalyptic proportions - whose aftermath is mind-numbing.
