As you think ahead to the next museum you may want to visit, start planning now to make it an even more meaningful experience than usual. Here are several things you can do:
1. Visit the museum's Website. Check out the exhibit schedule, hours of operation, and list of amenities. This is especially helpful if you have no particular time that you need to go, since you may choose to wait for a special display that will be coming up on a certain date. Once you know the museum's daily schedule, be sure to choose a date that it is open. Some tourists mistakenly assume that museums are closed on Sunday. Actually, many are open that day, but close instead on a weekday. You need to find out ahead of time before you go out of town and make tight plans for your vacation.
2. Check out your topic ahead of time. For example, if you are interested in rock music and plan to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, you should do a little researching of some of the popular inductees. That way you will especially enjoy the exhibit of their personal effects at the museum as well as better understand their value. Check library sources or Web pages on a subject before you go.
3. Try to visit on an off-season day. Depending on where the museum is located and the time of year you plan to travel, you may want to arrange your schedule so you can arrive when there are fewer tourists to crowd the site. Also keep an eye on the weather. For example, many Southern plantations and outdoor sites, like Jamestown in Virginia, lack air conditioning. You don't want to have to stand in long lines with tired toddlers on a sultry day.
4. Check for the amenities. When you arrive, keep an eye open for the restroom locations and snack bar. Again, if you take kids, they will probably ask for these things at some point during your visit. Know where these sites are located and how to get there as quickly as possible when needed. Conversely, identify souvenir locations and keep the kids away from those areas to prevent their clamoring to buy something. Pack snacks and diapers for the babies, as well as any diversions or favorite toys for the kids to take along.
5. Preserve the memories. Take photographs where permitted, though in some areas they will be limited or prohibited. Buy postcards for your scrapbook or friends. When you get home, send an email or write a journal entry that describes the highlights of your visit. That way the excitement, amazement, and insight of your discoveries can be revisited whenever you like.
Museums offer fascinating insights into past cultures and unusual curiosities. Since time is precious for many of us, plan ahead to fully enjoy and capture the memories you will make during your next landmark visit.
