A prudent housekeeper will look for ways to save money while cleaning. The cost of energy increases year after year. But there are things you can do to help keep costs down. From lighting to scheduling, a few simple steps can help to control expenses.  

Laundry can be a big money-waster. When washing clothes, make sure you don¡¯t overload your washer, as this can put a strain on the machinery and cause it to wear out faster. Short-term, the appliances may require more energy to get the job done. Another thing to remember is to use the right amount of detergent, as too much can clog the filter or drain and slow the operation as well as potentially cause plumbing problems. Set the gauge at the right water temperature for maximum efficiency. Use the high spin speed when doing jeans, denim shirts, and towels so it will get rid of a lot of the water and help your clothes to dry faster. 

When moving clothes from the washer to the dryer, keep the lint filter clean by removing it and wiping off the accumulated debris with a paper towel. Don¡¯t set the dryer to run for an entire hour to do just a few items. Avoid opening the dryer door and letting the heat out. Run your dryer on permanent press cycles instead of the normal heat cycle because it uses less energy. On nice days, try putting up a clothesline and hanging your clothes outdoors, which will make your clothes smell nice and give you a little bit of exercise. Don¡¯t operate your washer and dryer at the peak time of the day; wait for evening or do laundry early in the morning.

Insulate your water heater and hot water pipes so that they do not take as long when the water heater is trying to heat your water. Use cold water as much as you can for cleaning jobs that don¡¯t really need hot water. Use cold water in your garbage disposal when cleaning it. It helps to fix all leaky faucets. Scrape the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Wait until you have a full load of dishes before running the dishwasher, because it will cost the same whether you have few or many dishes to wash. When you use the oven, wait until it cools downs as the best time to use your automatic oven cleaner. 

When you get ready to do the vacuuming, first pick up toys, empty cans, clothes, or anything else that needs to be put away so you don¡¯t have to stop and waste energy doing this while the vacuum is running. Don¡¯t let the bag in your sweeper get too full, because after the bag reaches about three-fourths full, it will not have very good suction. 

When you are cleaning out and defrosting your refrigerator, have someone help to pull it out so you can vacuum the dust from behind it. This will make the refrigerator last longer, run better, and save money. Remember to always change filters or clean them in air conditioners and furnaces to get the best results.
