Surround sound systems add additional speakers to audio or home theater systems in order to create a more realistic field of sound. Whether the listener is in a small living room or a large theatre, surround sound allows sounds to come from different places within the room. For example, if a movie is playing a scene where a car drives by, surround sound systems allow the sound to begin in the back of the room and move toward the front of the room as the car on the movie drives by. Most surround sound systems have rear speakers that play ambient noises and special effects, and they employ a center speaker that plays dialog or vocals. 

Besides adding additional speakers to home stereo systems, surround sound systems separate different ranges or frequencies of sounds into different channels. In the 1950s, stereophonic sound, or "stereo" was commercially introduced as a vast improvement over "mono" sound. Early stereo systems and current surround systems operate via a similar principle of separating ranges of sounds into different channels. Whereas stereo systems separate different sounds into two channels, most surround sound systems separate sounds into four or more channels. Some movie theater surround sound systems separate seven channels of sound into eight or more speakers. 

The biggest drawback to the basic stereo audio system is that most people position their two speakers side by side in the front of the room. This creates a flat sound since the listener hears sounds coming from only one direction. In the 1970s, beginning with films such as Star Wars, Dolby Labs began setting the standards for today's surround sound systems. These early surround sound systems were operating primarily in theaters, where listeners were astonished to hear sounds such as the Millennium Falcon passing from the left rear theater speakers through the right front speakers. With each surround sound speaker making a separate part of the sound spectrum, the combined effect of the multiple speakers was a richer, fuller field of sound. The popularity of Dolby's surround sound systems allowed the company to create home audio and theater surround sound systems. 

Not only do movies sound more realistic with surround sound, but music does, too. Classical music played on a surround sound system allows listeners to hear each instrument playing from the appropriate side of the speakers as if the listener were sitting in front of a stage listening to an orchestra play. 

The heart of today's home audio or theater system is the receiver/amplifier. In order for sounds to be separated into four or more channels for a surround sound system, the receiver/amplifier must decode the audio signal and synchronize how each range of sounds must be played by each speaker. There are now several companies that sell surround sound systems if you want to upgrade from a mono or stereo sound system to surround sound. Look for a receiver/amplifier with a surround sound decoder/processor, and buy at least four or five speakers appropriate to the system. Most DVD players have a built-in decoder to detect most surround sound systems, and most new music is labeled with which surround sound systems it is compatible with. 

Here is an overview of some of the surround sound systems currently on the market: 

First, there is Dolby Pro Logic, a five-speaker system. This is one of the earlier surround sound systems but also one of the most affordable. It employs two front speakers that play in stereo, a center speaker, and two rear speakers that play together in mono. The television's speaker can be used as the center speaker in any of these setups. 

Next, there is Dolby Digital, a six-speaker system. Often called 5.1 because it digitally encodes an audio signal, Dolby Digital produces higher-quality sound than Dolby Pro Logic. The Dolby Digital receiver/amplifier usually costs more than a Dolby Pro Logic receiver, and the system requires the purchase of an additional subwoofer. The subwoofer plays more of the lower bass frequencies close to 20 hertz, the threshold of human hearing, which would often not be audible without a subwoofer. Thanks to the unidirectional quality of low frequencies, the subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room, and it will fill the bass in a room without creating sound that seems to come from one direction. Dolby Digital has the additional advantage of separating the audio signal into separate channels for the rear speakers so that they play in stereo, too. 

Dolby Digital EX is a seven-speaker system. Digital EX receivers are more expensive than Dolby Digital receivers. The Digital EX system is basically the same as Dolby Digital, but it adds a sixth channel for a rear speaker that goes directly behind the listener. A complete Dolby Digital EX system employs a center speaker for vocals/dialog, two front speakers playing in stereo, two side speakers playing in stereo, a rear center speaker, and a subwoofer. 

Besides Dolby surround sound systems, there is at least one other company on the market with quality surround sound. Digital Theater Systems (DTS) produces a seven-channel, high-end system in competition with the Dolby Digital EX system. The first DTS movie was 1993s Jurassic Park. Many compact disks are now encoded to work with DTS surround sound systems.

The principal components of a surround sound system are at least four speakers and a receiver/amplifier with a surround sound decoder/processor. Some of the basic surround sound systems cost about as much as a typical two-speaker stereo system. The result is a richer, unidirectional field of sound with crisper-sounding music and movies that sound more realistic.
