Robots have been used for some time in industries to perform routine and repetitive jobs such as assembly of cars. The Honda Motor Car Company has developed a robot that is advanced over others in the sense that it can mimic some human movements such as walking in a smooth manner, climbing stairs, understanding commands in Japanese and recognizing faces. Honda has named this ASIMO, which is an acronym for Advanced Step In Innovative Mobility. ASIMO is meant to help people especially the elderly and the disabled. It can also be used to perform hazardous jobs such as handling toxic materials or dousing fires. 

ASIMO is built like the frame of a human body with limbs and joints. The joints can move up and down as well as from side to side. This property allows the robot to move in a manner similar to humans. ASIMO has sensors for speed, balance, force and angle that connect to a central computer. These sensors perform functions similar to that of human inner ears, muscles and skin and also contribute to ASIMO¡¯s ability to walk more like humans than like earlier robots. ASIMO uses its sensors to remain stable as it walks over uneven surfaces and to change direction without stopping or stumbling. 

ASIMO is similar to other robots in that it uses servomotors. These have rotating shafts with devices to sense angles and can be started and stopped to make definitive movements on behalf of the robot. The power of the motor can adjust to the load carried.

ASIMO has a program with hundreds of thousands of images stored. Video cameras act as eyes and the images are compared with stored images to recognize faces and objects. The images also appear on the computer screen of a real person who controls ASIMO. ASIMO is able to use this system to enter an area and perform a task for which images have been stored in its memory. 

ASIMO can be controlled by wireless transmission or by voice commands that have been entered beforehand in the database. Thus the robot moves in a manner similar to any remote controlled toy but with the important advance that it is able to correct itself for obstacles and inclines that it encounters in the course of movement. ASIMO can also respond verbally to standard routines of conversation that have been programmed in to its memory.  

ASIMO works on a rechargeable battery that can work for 30 minutes on a full charge. The latter takes 4 hours. ASIMO cannot work without a controller or in an unknown environment. It is therefore not a substitute for a human though it is an impressive advance over earlier robots. 

ASIMO is designed to look friendly and harmless. It has an appearance of an astronaut and this enables its computer to appear as a backpack. Other Japanese companies are in the process of developing robots that will rival or perhaps even surpass ASIMO. These developments will help release human intellect for more creative and intelligent purposes and will also help the weak and vulnerable lead better lives.
