More and more people have decided to kick the habit and throw away the smokes forever. That¡¯s great, but don¡¯t throw away the old ash trays. Instead, clean them up and make beautiful crafts. Glass or crystal ashtrays, in particular, can be used to make some unique creations. Turn flat, glass ashtrays into a flower garden by first using hot glue to attach a 4" round mirror to the bottom of the ashtray. The mirror might be a little wobbly, but will tighten up as the other items are glued around it. Place a wood chip or flat rock on the bottom of the ashtray, with one end supporting mirror, then add a small amount of Spanish moss to cover the rest of the glass bottom. Be sure the moss comes up far enough to cover the dips in the ashtray that previously held your cigarette. Now begin adding small silk flowers and leaves, letting some of them ¡°crawl¡± over the wood chip and up the mirror sides. You can place a miniature butterfly on the wood chip or the top mirror edge. 

Deep glass ashtrays make fabulous candle holders and take only a few moments to decorate. Turn the ash tray upside-down and place the candle on top. Use garland, silk flowers, beads or other adornments to cover the bottom ridge of the ashtray. The candle holder can be made from metal ashtrays, too. 

Huge, coffee table ashtrays can be turned into a nice centerpiece for any table. Since these ashtrays can be virtually any shape, use your imagination to decorate them. You can make a basket full of apples from one by arranging grass, leaves or pine branches in the ashtray. Glue plastic apples around in the grass, then sprinkle real or craft candies around in the basket. You can also turn an ash tray upside-down and glue wide ribbon around the edges. Then place felt on the bottom of the ashtray and set up a miniature village. You can also lay a tea towel down in the large ashtray and arrange real or plastic veggies. 

For the bathroom, certain ashtrays make great soap dish or jewelry holders. Use crafting clay to build up the depressions that hold the cigarette butts. After it¡¯s completely dry, spread glue over the entire under side of the ashtray, then dip in beads. You might have to do this more than once to get the ashtray completely covered. Set on counter in bathroom for holding jewelry. For a soap dish, use the clay to build up the depressions, and then paint the ashtray with a texture paint. These types of paints are very thick and are dabbed on with a paintbrush. After drying, the object appears to be made of stone. You don¡¯t have to fill the depressions in with clay if you don¡¯t want to. You can leave the depressions, but then you risk someone using it for an ashtray, or you can glue a large stone or bead into the depression. 

Melt wax, set wick, and pour candle directly into a glass or crystal ashtray. Decorate around the sides of the ashtray with strings of beads. Glue 2 or 3 strands of beads, side by side, around the rim of the ashtray, allowing the beads to gather in the depressions before raising the strands back up to the edge again. Plastic ashtrays can be glued to the underside of a saucer to make a unique stand for a candle. Glue the bottom of the ashtray to the bottom of the saucer, and then paint the entire holder with dimension paint. There are dozens of other ways you can use old ashtrays to make crafts. Look around the house for ideas on making other unique and beautiful creations.
