PayPal began in 1998 as a venue to pay for online auctions. The company promised safe and secure transfers of funds from your bank or credit card. In 2002, the company was acquired by eBay. It now boasts 56 million account holders in 45 countries around the world. In addition to auctions, PayPal serves a large portion of online merchants offering many different kinds of products. Like eBay, some items are prohibited, such as alcohol products, online gambling and most adult material.
PayPal offers three levels of accounts in order to serve the individual needs of its members.
Personal accounts are those held by private individuals. Benefits of a personal account include sending money to anyone with an email account at no charge, receiving money at no charge, unless made by credit card and the option of upgrading to a premier account at no charge. There is a limit to the amount of money you can receive in your personal account each month. To receive credit card payments you must upgrade to a premier account.
Premier accounts offer sending money free, low fees for receiving money, no limits on credit card payments and exclusive tools for eBay auction sellers and small merchants.
Business accounts are for large volume eBay sellers and other online merchants. Business accounts include all the core features of the other accounts plus toll free customer service, subscription options, use of a business or corporate name and multi-user access. You can also set up your own storefront using a PayPal business account.
The choice of account type is up to the user, although you must take into account how much money you expect to receive through the account in any one month. For online auctions and website payments, a premier or business account is usually the best.
Signing up with PayPal is fast and secure. You supply an email address, contact and credit card information. Once your email and credit card are confirmed, your account is ready to be used. This is generally done within a few minutes. A bank account can be added also for instant transfer of PayPal account balances. This involves filling out the PayPal form with your banks routing number and your account number. PayPal will then make several small deposits; usually less than a dime each, into your bank account and you verify those deposits on line. Transfers from PayPal to your bank account are free and are completed in around four days. If you request a check for funds, the cost is around three dollars and takes approximately a week to ten days.
PayPal guarantees your information, both contact and credit card to be safe and secure. The main benefit of paying with PayPal is only they have your private financial information. This information is not revealed to the merchant or auction seller you purchase from, only your name and shipping address is disclosed.
The fees PayPal withholds on credit card payments into your account are generally less than or at least comparable to other online merchant accounts. These fees are automatically deducted from the payment as it is received. There are no fees for any credit card payments you may make. You can also pay eBay fees with your account.
By using PayPal for your online purchases and auction payments, you are assured fast, easy and private money transactions. In this day of identity theft, those assurances are worth any price. |
