Everyone looks forward to Thanksgiving, but sitting through a long meal with adult conversation can be a challenge for kids.  Try some of these easy, little-supervision-needed Thanksgiving projects that kids can do to decorate their own table and keep them busy.  

Leaf Print Tablecloth/Napkins

Supplies Needed:

Tablecloth (white paper or inexpensive cloth)

Large Napkins (white paper or inexpensive cloth)

Fabric Paints (Fall colors)

Paintbrushes

Leaves

Paper towels

Instructions:

Place a number of paper towels in front of each little artist with a napkin or portion of the tablecloth on top of the paper towels.  Select a leaf and place on the fabric.  Dip brush into paint and brush the paint around the edge of the leaf.  Carefully lift the leaf from the fabric and the leaf print is revealed.  Duplicate with as many leaves and colored paints as desired.  Fabric paint dries quickly, so this project can be done an hour before dinner is served.

Try adding a fabric pen to the craft and ask each child to write, or have an adult write, on the napkin/tablecloth what they are most thankful for this year; a great keepsake or take home remembrance.

Feathered Napkin Wrap/Headdress

Supplies Needed:

Napkins

?¡± Elastic Banding Tape (craft/fabric stores)

Bead

Feather

Glue

Instructions:

Cut a long strip of elastic banding tape ¨C enough to wrap and tie around a child¡¯s head.  In the center glue a feather and a colored bead ¨C the bead will keep the feather in place.  Allow to dry.  Center the feather on the front of a folded napkin and loosely tie the band around the back.  Place the napkin on the table.  The napkin wrap can double as a headdress during, and after, the feast.

Turkey Place Cards

Supplies:

Yellow & Red Felt

Glue

Wiggly Eyes

Small brown pompom

Pinecone

Pipe Cleaners

Scissors

Small Slips of Paper

Cut a small triangle from yellow felt as a beak, and a red wattle (the letter B) from red felt.  Glue the beak, wattle and wiggly eyes on the brown pompom to create the turkey¡¯s head.

Place the pinecone on its side.

Glue the pompom head to the tip of a pinecone.

Wrap two or three pipe cleaners around the last row of the pinecone and create loops at the end of the pipe cleaners as the turkey¡¯s tail feathers.

Weave a slip of paper through the tail feather loops, with the guests name written on it.  Place at the table setting.

A large basket filled with these turkeys also makes a great centerpiece.

Indian Vest

Supplies:

Grocery Bag

Scissors

Craft Supplies

Instructions:

Cut a circle in the bottom of a paper grocery bag large enough to fit a child¡¯s head through.  Turn the bag inside out and cut fringe at the ¡°top¡± of the bag.  Write an Indian name for the child on the back of vest and have the new warrior decorate his/her vest.  Slip over the child¡¯s head and hope the tribe is friendly.

Thanksgiving Favor Bags

Supplies:

Brown Lunch Bag

Scissors

Stickers

Crayons/Markers

Felt

Glue

Feathers

Beads

Twine or Rubber Bands

Instructions:

Cut a brown lunch bag in half and label with each child¡¯s name.  Allow kids to decorate their own favor bags with stickers, crayons, markers, felt, feathers, beads and glue. 

Stuff with some of these favors that little chefs can help create and tie off with twine or a rubber band.

Marshmallow Pilgrim Hats

Place a chocolate-striped cookie, stripes down, on wax paper.

Melt chocolate chips in a microwave. 

One at a time, stick a wooden toothpick into a large marshmallow, dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate, and quickly center it on top of the cookie. 

Using a second toothpick to lightly hold down the marshmallow, carefully pull out the first toothpick. 

Chill the hats until the chocolate sets.

Turkey Tracks

Spread round crackers with peanut butter or cheese spread, then arrange chow mein noodles on top of each one to resemble a 3-toed turkey footprint.  Tip:  Curvier noodles look best.

Sugar Cone Cornucopia

Place a sugar cone on its side and spread chocolate frosting on the inside.  Fill with candies such as raspberry jellies, candy corn or citrus slices.

Turkey Cookies

Spread a round chocolate wafer cookie with chocolate frosting.  Place a mini peanut butter cup on the frosting as a turkey body and surround with candy corn as feathers.   Cut out two small triangles from yellow and red fruit roll-ups as a beak and wattle and attached to the peanut butter cup with frosting.
