Bats are an essential Halloween symbol, so don¡¯t even think of trying to decorate for Halloween this season without making this awesome flying bat project with your kids.  It is cheap, simple and tons of fun.  

Materials:

Yellow or white heavy poster board

Black and orange constructions paper (other colors are optional)

Scissors

Fishing line or string

Tape 

Glue or glue stick

Bat drawing or picture

Pencil

Ruler or measuring tape

Hole punch

Function of materials:

The yellow or white poster will be to create the top of the mobile-like structure from which the bats will hang.

The black and orange construction paper will be cut according to the bat drawing or picture of your choice to create the flying bats.

The fishing line attaches the flying bats to the top of the structure.  If you don¡¯t care whether the string is visible, then you don¡¯t need to use fishing line.  Thin string or thread, whatever is readily available in your home can substitute nicely.  

Step by step instructions:

The project includes quite a bit of cutting, so to begin, let¡¯s get all of the cutting out of the way.

1) Cut fishing line or string to various lengths, between 5 and 15 feet long.  You can use a ruler or measuring tape to cut string to exact lengths.  Set aside

2) Next, take the yellow (or white) heavy poster board that is to become the top of the structure and draw on it a large half or crescent moon shape with your pencil.  Cut it out and set it aside.

3) Now comes the fun part, making the bats.  First fold a piece of construction paper in half.  Using the bat picture of your choice as a guide, trace or freehand the whole bat outline onto one half of the paper.  Cut it out keeping the paper folded so that you end up with two identical bats.  Continue to draw bats of different sizes on folded construction paper and repeat the process until you have the desired number of bats. You should make at least 7 (plus its look alike) bats per mobile structure.

4) Now the cutting is complete.  Take the previously cut fishing line and tape it to the back of one bat.  

5) Take the bat¡¯s identical twin, the one cut from the same paper, and glue it to the back side of the bat, covering the string and tape.  Once the bats are glued together, they should look like one seamless bat.  

6) Punch small holes around the edges of the poster board moon.  Pull the free end of the string through the hole.  Secure the string by taping it the top of the moon, on the side facing the ceiling so no one will see the tape.  The bats should be hanging at different lengths.  

7) To hang the structure, poke a small hole in the middle of the crescent moon top and pull some of the string through.  Knot one side of the string to where it is secure, and cannot make its way through the hole.  Loop and knot the other side of the string and hang it wherever you like.

Your spooky bats will be the center of attention at any Halloween gathering.
