Children love crafts and it seems they love them at Christmas more than any other time of the year.  Here are some simple Christmas Ornaments you can make that require very few supplies and ingredients and are easy for the smallest of children.

Clothespin Reindeer

Supplies needed for one reindeer:

3 Wooden clothespins

Small (7mm) Wiggle eyes

Small pompoms (brown or red)

Fine tip red marker 

Ribbon

Household Glue

Instructions:

Glue two clothespins together - side to side - to create the four legs of the reindeer.  Glue the third clothespin to the legs so it points up to create the reindeer head and ears.  Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.  Glue on the wiggle eyes, one red pompom for the nose and one brown pompom for the tail.  Use the fine tip red marker to add a mouth with a smile.  Tie on a ribbon around the reindeer neck to create a loop to hang from your tree and enjoy!

Ideas:

Use a fine tip black marker and add eyelashes or other facial embellishments. Make several and add to a tabletop sleigh for an original Christmas tabletop centerpiece. Tie the finished reindeer onto your gifts or add to a gift basket for a little extra charm.

Bread Dough Ornament

Here are simple instructions to create fun Christmas ornaments made from dough and cut out with cookie cutters.  

Supplies Needed:

Clay dough (recipe follows)

Assorted Christmas cookie cutters

Cookie sheet

Small dowel rod or toothpick

Assorted Acrylic Paint

Paint Brushes 

Spray on Craft Glue 

Glitter and assorted decorations such as small candies, licorice, coconut, etc.

Spray on Acrylic Sealer

Clay Dough Recipe:

2 cups table salt

1 cup water

2 cups flour

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.  Mix the ingredients together in a medium-size mixing bowl until the dough is fairly stiff.  Depending on the humidity levels, you may need to adjust the water or flour to get good stiff dough.  Knead the dough until it is smooth.  On a flour-dusted surface, use a rolling pin and roll the dough out to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness (a little thicker than for real cookies).  Cut out the ornaments or shape by hand and place on a cookie sheet.  Use a toothpick or small dowel rod and punch a hole through the top of the ornament to provide a place to attach a loop of thin wire to the top of the ornament. Bake for 1 ? to 2 hours or until they are hard to the touch. Allow the ornaments to cool completely before painting and decorating.

Now the fun begins.  Use your acrylic paints to paint the ornaments.  Add your own ornamentation or follow the suggested tricks and ideas to really jazz up your ornaments. After you are finished painting and decorating, spray them with an acrylic sealer to preserve the ornaments so you can enjoy them from year to year.

Tricks and Ideas:

You can make this dough ahead of time, covered tightly in plastic wrap, and kept in the refrigerator for several days. Mix some food coloring into the plain dough for a rainbow of colors. Keep a small container of water handy to ¡°glue¡± separate pieces of dough together.

Use a small ball of aluminum foil as filler when creating snowmen.  The foil will provide lightness to the ornament and still allow the dough to cook normally. Before baking, cut a hole in the center of your ornament.  Add some crushed hard candies; bake as directed and your ornament will look like stained glass.

Spray the ornament lightly with aerosol craft glue and add a light sprinkling of glitter or drop a small amount of plain coconut or cotton onto the ornament to create snow. Use a garlic press to create hair for an angel or a beard for Santa. Add candy Red Hots to bread dough wreaths to simulate holly berries.

Instead of using cookie cutters, you can create any shape you want.  One example would be to tint one part of the dough red and leave one part of the dough plain, roll the dough into separate ropes and twist to create simple candy canes.

Use a pretty ribbon instead of thin wire to hang your ornament on the Christmas tree. Write inscriptions on the back of the ornaments with a black indelible marker and attach to gifts for a neat gift tag. Don¡¯t forget to add your name and date to the back of the ornament for future memories.
