Recycling is one way we can save our planet. Here are a couple of nice ideas to recycle burnt out light bulbs. Not only will you create some great decorations, you get the added benefit of not adding to our overflowing land fills.
Heavenly Angel
This cute little angel ornament utilizes the roundness of the lightbulb for the body while the socket becomes her head complete with a gold wire halo.
Items Needed:
One burnt out light bulb for each angel
White, pink, and flesh colored acrylic paint
Rubbing alcohol
Remnant piece of lace
Two small bunches of tiny white silk flowers
Cotton fiber-fill
Gold cord or ribbon for trim
Gold craft wire
Small amount of white netting
Wire cutters
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Permanent Black marker
Instructions
To help the acrylic paint stick to the light bulb, begin by rubbing the bulb thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. Allow the alcohol to dry. Paint the entire surface of the bulb (it's not necessary to paint the socket) with two coats of the white acrylic paint, allowing the paint to dry completely between coats. If the bulb looks streaky after the second coat, try using a sponge brush to cut down on the streaks and paint on a third coat. Allow the paint to completely dry before assembling the angel.
Using the gold craft wire, carefully form a halo about the size of the diameter of the socket. Leave enough wire hanging from the halo to allow you to secure it to the light bulb. Set the halo aside.
To create the angel wings, use the gold craft wire and cut two lengths of wire about 5¡± long with the wire cutters. Manipulate the wire lengths into the shape of the wings, wrapping the wire to itself to secure it into shape. Fold a piece of the white netting over each angel wing, cutting it to size and securing it with the hot glue. Set the wings aside.
Drape the piece of lace remnant around the bulb. Cut the remnant big enough to create a shawl for the angel. Set the shawl aside.
Once the bulb has dried completely, you can begin assembling the angel. Attach the halo to the socket of the bulb by winding the gold wire tightly around the socket. When you are finished attaching the halo, twist the wire so the halo will stay in place above the head of the angel.
Take a small bunch of fiber-fill and roll into a small cigar shape just long enough to go around the circumference of the socket where it meets the bulb. Use the hot glue to secure the roll of fiber-fill in the gap between the socket and bulb to create the angel¡¯s hair. Cover the edge of the socket above the fiber-fill with the gold fabric strip securing it with the hot glue. Hot glue some of the small silk flowers to the socket so the entire surface of the socket is covered.
Using a small paint brush and the flesh colored acrylic paint, paint on the angel¡¯s face. Use a permanent marker with a small tip and draw on the eyes and mouth. Dab a Q-tip into the pink acrylic paint and dot cheeks onto the angel. Blot with the unused end of the Q-tip if the pink comes out too dark.
To create a bouquet, bunch some of the small white silk flowers together and secure with a bow made from the gold ribbon. Glue onto the front of the ornament about halfway down the front of the angel. Drape the lace shawl back onto the ornament and secure it with the hot glue.
Carefully turn the angel over and hot glue the angel wings to the back of the ornament. Glue a long loop of the gold cord over the angel wings to create a hanger for the ornament.
Hang your ornament from the Christmas Tree or make several for use as decorations around the room.
Reindeer Ornament
This ornament is created using the large outdoor Christmas bulbs in place of a regular sized light bulb. With the different colored bulbs available, you can create a rainbow of reindeer ornaments that will bring enjoyment to all.
Items Needed:
One large outdoor Christmas bulb for each ornament
One 3/4 inch red pom pom
Two small wiggly eyes
One standard size brown pipe cleaner
Gold cord or ribbon for trim
Black permanent marker
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Instructions:
This ornament is created with the light bulb turned upside down so the socket becomes the top of the head of the reindeer.
Begin by gluing the eyes onto the widest section of the bulb. Glue the pom pom nose under the eyes. Draw on a mouth using a fine tip permanent marker.
Create the reindeer antlers by twisting the center of the brown pipe cleaner around the socket end of the bulb and twisting the two ends into the shape of antlers. Wind a piece of the gold cord around the center of socket, create a loop and glue it into place to make a hanger for the ornament.
