1963: Civil Rights March on Washington.The civil rights movement in the United States reached one of its climaxes on this day when Martin Luther King, Jr., and other civil rights leaders organized the March on Washington, addressing problems of racial equality. An interracial assembly of more than 200,000 gathered in the nation's capital, in the shadow of the (Abraham) Lincoln Memorial, to demand equal justice for all citizens under the law.
