2004: EU call for sanctions on The Sudan.In response to an explosion of violence in the Darfur region, the European Union advocated on this day that the United Nations institute economic sanctions against The Sudan until its civil unrest is brought under control. Early in 2003 rural groups claiming that they had been discriminated against took up arms in protest of government neglect of Darfur. Government militias responded harshly, launching a brutal campaign across the countryside. Widespread atrocities that some labeled genocide and ethnic cleansing resulted in a humanitarian crisis by the middle of 2004. More events on this day
