1814: British troops halt American advance into Canada .On this day, during the War of 1812, in the Battle of Lundy's Lane, British troops thwarted an invasion of Canada by a U.S. force commanded by General Jacob Brown. The U.S. troops, fresh from victory at the Battle of Chippewa on July 5, 1814, advanced on the British position established at Lundy's Lane (1.6 km [1 mile] west of Niagara Falls) by General Phineas Riall, and the battle began at 6 PM.
