1951: Tibet annexed by China.On this day the Chinese government formally annexed the territory of Tibet as an autonomous region. After China's earlier invasion of Tibet, an appeal by the Dalai Lama to the United Nations had been denied, and India and Britain had failed to offer support. A Tibetan delegation summoned to China had to sign a treaty dictated by the conquerors. It professed to guarantee Tibetan autonomy and religion but also allowed the establishment at Lhasa of Chinese civil and military headquarters. More events on this day
