1868: U.S. President Andrew Johnson acquitted.On this day the first of two key votes in the Senate impeachment trial of U.S. President Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, was held. It eventually fell one short of the necessary two-thirds needed for conviction, as seven Republicans voted with Johnson's supporters. Johnson was exonerated of the charges that, contrary to statute, he attempted to remove from office Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton—ally of the Radical Republicans within his cabinet.
