Dark Chocolate Peppermint Altoids have arrivedPosted Jan 10th 2007 8:02PM by Joe DiStefanoFiled under: Chocolate, Candy, Raves & Reviews, New ProductsEarlier this summer Nicole tipped us off to the impending arrival of dark chocolate-covered Altoids. This afternoon while impatiently waiting in line to purchase some much-needed dental floss after an afternoon spent eating Korean barbecue I spied a tin of Dark Chocolate Dipped Peppermint Altoids. When I got home I took the tin out of my shopping bag and brought it to my nose only to find that I could smell chocolate and mint through the plastic wrap. Upon opening the tin I was greeted by an even more intense aroma. I crunched one up and found it pretty tasty. Soon I popped a few more. Although the intensity of the peppermint was tempered by the dark chocolate coating, I was left with a refreshing minty cool chocolateness that lingered on my palate for some time.Since I managed to crunch up four of the little buggers in the space of three minutes, I decided to take a break and head over to the Altoids web site. I frittered away about five minutes in the multimedia shooting gallery, which curiously enough did not feature the chocolate-covered variety.I was now ready for the second phase of my tasting: letting an entire chocolate-dipped Altoid melt in my mouth. I must confess that I aimed too high, for as soon as I had let the decadent dark chocolate melt away I crunched up the mint that lay inside. Aferwards I found that the mintiness remained but the chocolate flavor was almost gone. Luckily there was disk of chocolate inside the tin with no mint attached. I placed it upon my tongue like a Communion wafer and smiled beatifically as my chocolate withdrawal washed away.I'm not quite sure that the chocolatey mints eliminated my garlic breath. When I want a breath mint I'll stick to the original variety of Altoids, but if I'm craving "A Curious and Original Chocolate Experience," I know where to find it.
