Diamond-studded Easter egg

Posted Apr 12th 2006 11:41AM by Nicole WestonFiled under: Chocolate, Food Oddities, Europe

Over at Luxist, they reported that La Maison du Chocolate has put together one of the world's most expensive Easter eggs. Priced at £50,000 (about $87,000), the 2-foot tall egg is made of chocolate that was imported from France and is entirely covered with 100 half-carat diamonds. On the inside, the egg has a peach, apricot and praline filling, and it is interesting to note that the egg - less the diamonds, of course - is completely edible. The egg is on display at La Maison du Chocolate in London.

21. It really makes me sad to think people are so anal as to do something like this. Just the time alone they had to pay the person sculpting this egg. They could have donated that money to help poor starving children in the world. Or better yet bought thousands of easter baskets to give to the children that won't recieve one on Easter. Pathetic is the only word I have for this disgrace.

22. So what if the egg melts...who gets to dive in there and save the diamonds? Can I possibly be a candidate if they give out any applications for the job!

24. Easter is not about easter eggs!!! Easter is about JESUS CHRIST being raised from the dead for our sins and being alive today. He is on the right side of GOD RIGHT NOW!!!

25. But what I want to know is since it is a display why is is so ugly? I was expecting this magnificant gorgeous design that incorporated the diamonds not diamond in a circle and stars. I think they should have let a more imaginative artist decorate it. After all they do have the money.

26. This is a perfect example of someone having WAY too much money and WAY too much time on their hands! What a waste!

28. Right on Suzie. I am a victim of Hurricane Katrina and the gulf coast still needs lots of support. I have pictures of Biloxi and Gulfport, MS taken last Saturday (seven months later) and it still is a mess. If anyone would like for me to send the pics email me at zuukeeeper@aol.com. I would be glad to share. Oh by the way, I am a jeweler of 19 years and I can appreciate a 100 Diamonds for $87k (if they are SI quality or better) but lets sell the egg on eBay to help people out. Happy Easter

30. Doesn't interest me in the least, seems like a bad way to spend money.
They wasted their time making this egg, back to the drawing board!

31. This is sheer brilliance. As Keats wrote, "a thing of beauty is a joy forever." Perhaps all of you naysayers whining about people who have "too much money and too much time" on their hands WISH that you had the kind of financial freedom to create something as stunning as the 50 carat egg. Just venturing a guess.

As for the "true meaning of 'easter,'" as Misty wrote, the word "easter" is derived from "eostre," which was the Northern European pagan rite of fertility (hence the egg) that was eventually absorbed by the Christian church and turned into the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ.

For all of you talking about how the creators and funders of this egg should be "feeding the starving," I would suggest that you consider that the next time you go out and buy something that you REALLY DON'T NEED, be it a Happy Meal, a bar of chocolate or another T-shirt or pair of shoes. If not, please come down from your soapboxes, because it reads like jealous, self-righteous hypocrisy.

32. You know what? All of you who are enraged about the overexpensive quality of this egg are likely hypocrites. Had you the money necessary to have made the egg, you most likely wouldn't have used it to buy Easter baskets for underpriviledged children or anything of the sort - you would've spent it on yourself or on your friends and family. I'm not saying that everyone would do this, of course.. but I'm certain that many would. So before you start to get preachy, remember that the egg is currently -on display- so that people can enjoy it without having to buy/make one themselves. I think it's a rather noble pursuit, and it's also just an example of the new mediums that modern art has begun to adopt.

33. I guess most of you will never understand the meaning of the word "art." If what all of you are saying is true, all art is pointless. All art is a waste of time. All art is stupid. Art isn't just pictures and paintings. It's so much more. There are sculptures. Body art, such as tatoos. Some artists make things out of scrap metal. How many of you would marvel over one such type of art? Now why not appreciate this person's unique vision of creativity? No, I don't understand it either. But what I do understand is art. And once you begin to put limits on the creative soul, you've ruined the whole idea and concept of art.

34. OK, so it's stupid---what's your point? Stupid is everywhere.
Need someone to take it home? LOOK!! I've got my hand raised---call on me, please..........

35. It isn't even pretty!!! It's a sorry way to represent Easter! Easter is a time of renewed hope, joy and gladness and to mock it with this base form is distressing.

36. Yup, serious waste of time and money. 'Course it's easy for me to say that 'cause I'm seriously envious of anyone who could afford it. Not that I would buy something like that, but it would be nice to have that option...

37. I guess we ALL have too much time on our hands...Look how many have weighed in on this egg? I think this was a thought provoking, controversial and unique idea. That's what makes it so good...it stirred controversy....Our world has become rather sad - it seems that everything we do anymore has to be tied in with charities -- why not just give it a rest, smell the roses and enjoy it?? If we all have been doing our part giving to charities, and worthy causes, it is so much easier to not analyze everything. I am not impressed with people who tell me how to spend my money.

38. You people are reading too much into this. It is just a form of expression. Noone is throwing anything away, or wasting anything. It is just for fun and in the spirit of spring and Easter.

Accept it for what it is....art!
