What's with all the sugar?Posted Aug 15th 2005 2:41AM by Sarah Gilbert I love my coffee with lots, and lots, of half-and-half, and though those flavored creamers excite me with all the yummy flavors, the trans-fat in the non-dairy varieties turned me off. So I was hopeful to try Coffee-mate's new Hazelnut Half-&-Half. And yesterday, I made my pot of coffee, I shook the bottle, I ripped off the foil, and poured a healthy portion of the creamy stuff into my favorite mug. I took a swig and nearly spit it across the kitchen - it tasted as if I'd also poured in a half-cup of sugar. I have the same reaction to Starbucks beverages when I forget to ask for "one pump" of flavored syrup (three pumps is the default for a Grande beverage), to sodas, to Gatorade, to storebought chocolate milk. I love the concept, Coffee-mate, but could you try it with maybe 1/4 of the sugar? And all the rest of you, did it ever occur to you that not every American likes their beverages so sickeningly sweet? I'll have to return to my from-scratch way of flavoring my coffee, adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to the beans before I grind them. And next time I see a delicious flavor of creamer, it will stay on the grocery store shelf. |
