McDonald's continues to expand menu items

Posted Mar 1st 2007 3:01PM by Joanne LutynecFiled under: Coffee, Snacks, Trends, New Products, Fast Food

There seems to be a lot of changes in the works at McDonald's lately - switching to trans-fat-free oil, introducing Eco-friendly coffee in the U.K., and even the possibility of selling prepackaged convenience beverages to consumers who would otherwise have to make a pit stop elsewhere to pick up their favorite bottled or canned drink.Now, in an effort to attract visitors throughout the day rather than just at regular meal times, McDonald's is planning the introduction of "destination beverages" such as smoothies, lattes, iced coffee and other specialty drinks. And that's not all -- if you are the sort of person who likes something sweet to go along with your latte, they'll soon be offering a "cinnamon melt" -- described by the company as "a warm, pull-apart sweet roll with cinnamon glaze." Does this all sound strangely familiar? I can't help but visualize Starbucks when I read the above. What is next? Big comfy chairs and couches in your local McDonald's restaurant? Dimmed lights and jazz music in the background? No word yet on when the specialty drinks will be available, but they do plan to have the cinnamon melt in select stores by the summer.

21. I live in East Peoria Illinois and work at McDonalds. We have the new cinnamon melt. We also have a fireplace at our store. We have french Vanilla Cappacino. Rootbeer floats, Shamrock shakes, Every year we get the McRib back for awhile too. I love working for the McDonalds because they work around your schedule when you have kids. They have the world's best crew at the East Peoria, Illinos McDonalds. The managers are great.

22. McDonald's does make the best coffee, and for way less than Star-who? And, their cinnamon rolls have been in L.A. for quite a while now.

23. We have a ''sophisticated'' McDonalds by us. It has the leather chairs, dim lights, mood music, etc. I have to say Mcdonalds, it does encourage me to come here alot more often! Like everyday... It's just clean, neat, and not real kiddie and dirty. Great job!

24. In Rome, close to the Spanish steps, they have a 2 story McDonalds that is heavenly. They have freshly made croissants and a variety of coffee, espresso, latte, and macchiatos.
Upstairs is a salad bar with 20 choices of salads and a much more diverse food menu. First time I loved going to McDonalds!

25. Mickey D's is Mickey D's. Stop trying to re-invent yourself already. It ain't working. Your salad's are crap, the new chicken wrap snack is crap, and you're not as clever or smart as Jack. I'm going Jack in the Box all the way!

26. Just had a cup of McD's decaf - kind of weak and acidic. What they REALLY need is a good veggie burger - that might lure me in more that once a year.

27. WHY DON'T THEY CHANGE THEIR NAME TO McDONE? THEY ARE SO,SO, LAME. THIS IS THE NEW GENERATION. THEY ARE TEACHING KIDS WHAT IS HEALTHY AND WHAT IS NOT. DID ANYBODY BOTHER TO "WAKE UP" TO "SUPERSIZE ME" (SEE THE "EXTRAS" ON THE DVD). THESE FAST FOOD PLACES ARE ONLY OUT FOR THE BUCK. THEY DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT OUR HEALTH. THEY ONLY WANT OUR MONEY. IT'S TOO LATE TO MODERNIZE YOUR MENU; YOU'RE WAY BEHIND THE TIMES. I PERSONALLY STOPPED EATING MEAT ALMOST 6 YEARS AGO. DON'T YOU WANT TO LIVE TO RETIRE?

28. to Kgee - I think McDonald's adapt to the location/city - and hey locals here love rice - and dunno where you live but we have tons of Starbucks and Jamba Juice outlets - We also cater to folks who don't like the local cuisine - - funny you have SO many complaints - about our islands - so why are you here ?
And why are you not elsewhere some other state ?
LOL we don't NEED YOUR KIND here - sorry !

We have SO many "mainland" food chains here - they have pushed out the little mom n' pops stores here - and lots of our local culture have been just disappearing for - Macy's - Chanel stores etc.

hmmmm -

come on - don't like it - please feel free to leave - we WON"T miss ya !

29. I still say people should support their local independent coffee shops and bakeries instead of the mega corporations like McDonalds, Walmart Starbucks etc. These companies are ruthless and continue to squeeze the little guys out of the market. Aren't you tired of the their sterile and generic stores and products? Wake up people and stop giving your business to these multi billion dollar greedy companies. Same thing goes for the mini marts at the gas stations. Why do people buy coffee, food, soda, etc at the gas stations. Don't they price gouge us enough with the $3.00 a gal gas?? DO you really want to throw more money at them Sheesh!!!

30. In Brazil, McD already has cafes and the coffee quality rivals most coffee shops there. My friends who would normally pass on McD food love the McD coffee shops! Why? less cost and same quality. Same in Germany. The McD cafe's are good and inexpensive coffees. Move over Starbucks.

31. McDonalds has 20 espresso machines in the L.A. area. We also have the cinnamon melts now for about a month.

32. Here in Michigan, McDonald's Latte's and Espresso are definitely cheaper than Starbuck's and all the coffee drinkers that have tried them really like them. Here in South Lyon we will be having a sampling on the 22nd thru the 24th of March.

35. well, considering i'm not a fan of fast food i'd let this go, but has anyone done your research on the coffee? people that care about the world and our economy would see how mcd's is going to be competition to starbucks. starbucks coffee is only 3.7% free trade coffee... where as, mcd's just switched to a free trade, organic coffee. it's better for you, the soil, the earth, and the economy!!! when mcd's changes this i'll be the first to buy a latte. i think starbucks is the one you should laugh at.

and if it's the nice couches and cozy atmosphere you're looking for, take 5 freakin' minutes out of your time in the morning to brew a cup of organic free trade coffee at home... guaranteed fresh and just the way you like it!

36. I think it's a great idea that McD's is
bringing a little something extra to the
table. I used to be a Starbuck's addict
also, spending almost $4 for a tall latte
probably four or five times a week. I
finally found a coffee machine that makes
lattes and cappucinos as good as Starbuck's. It's called the Tassimo machine by Braun. It uses specialized
T-discs that are read by some sort of
computer inside the machine so that it
makes the perfect cup of coffee. You can
make regular coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, lattes by using the specific T-disc
for the type of drink you want. It's
awesome. I've had the Tassimo machine
since November '06 and I've only been to
Starbucks twice since then. Although it's
a little more expensive than a regular
coffee brewer, I'm still saving money by
not going to Starbucks anymore! Yahoo!

38. Starbuck's a rip off! They charged way too much for FLAVORED coffee! & Starbucks isn't very healthy.. unless you get plain black coffee, it'll cost you nearly as much calories as an item at Mcdonalds. What sucks about Mcdonalds though, they don't have anything vegiterian, except salad. Why would I order salad? I usually just get large fries, then watch my husband devour mega loads of burgers.. MCDONALDS SHOULD HAVE VEGGIE BURGERS! I tried one at a Mcdonalds in LA, but I haven't seen one since I moved to Seattle. Which is a shame!

39. I rarely go to McD's anymore. However, recently I had an opportunity to go to one because a friend of mine needed to get some McD's french fry containers for an art project she was doing. So we got a bite to eat. I was very surprised by the choices they had on the menu and noticed the Angus Burger so I ordered the Angus with everything on it. It was surprisingly good!! I went back again to order it another day. I also told some other friends about McD's actually having a decent burger on their menu now and they tried it and all were quite surprised how good it tasted too. Maybe McD's is finally onto something.

40. McDonald's has the most processed, disgusting food ever. Even the "healthy" items aren't truly nutritious, and anything they do that will even remotely resemble Starbucks will somehow end up looking like all their other mass-produced crap. No one could PAY me to eat at McDonald's.
