21. It really shouldn't make a difference, you should buy organic foods whenever and wherever possible. Proper organic farming without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers over time produces healthier fruits and vegetables. Properly grown organic plants usually have little to no pests problems. William Crabill your comments about chemical fertilizers and pesticides being in the water are compeletly true. Unfortunately extensive use of man made fertilizers and pesticides have run off into our water supply, polluting the earth. Microbes, (good bacteria and soil life) found in soils high in organic content, will actually break down these chemicals rendering them harmless over time. The main thing that dissappoints me is that organic produce is much more expensive, it shouldn't be this way, if you farm organically and if you do it properly it should be way less expensive, cause nature is doing most of the work for you. Please support organic foods, because chemical fertilizers are slowing destroying the soil, poor soil grows weak and unhealthy plants, which we eat in some from or another. Poor soil also causes other problems such as run-off, meaning more floods which only spread this chemicals further. Posted at 8:29AM on Oct 11th 2007 by shane 22. Is anyone noticing a pattern here? I'm sorry if I'm sharing too much ACTUAL informative research, but anyone who suggests that, as a whole, "conventionaly grown" food is as safe and healthy as organic is either uninformed or a malicious liar. Your lies just do not stack up against the overwhelming data. And it keeps poring in! Sorry. Posted at 8:35AM on Oct 11th 2007 by D. Gover 24. I would no more deny my food its medicines than I would my child her vaccines and antibiotics. A fruit infested wtih bugs may add some protein, but its definitely not healthier than a well-sprayed clean fruit. Most chemical sprays break down within 48 hours of application and are dangerous, ironically, only to the applicator who takes risk to provide us with cleaner healthier food. "Organic" is a commercialized word to enable higher pricing. Let's stop being fooled by the organic nonsense. Posted at 8:41AM on Oct 11th 2007 by visitorda 25. Sorry to be so negitive, but you can quote all the tests & surveys you want & it doesn't prove a thing! Currently, in Virginia, since 2002 fish have been dying in the Shenandoah & other Western tributaries of the Potomac River. Scientists have been racing to find the cause. Something is causing this! (See the Washington Post Article of 6/19/07)...THIS IS THE WATER BEING USED TO IRRIGATE YOUR ORGANIC FOODS! In spite of five years of testing & special research funding authorized by the VA legislature the cause hasn't been Isolated, yet enough has been established that it is strongly suspected to be caused by farm runoff. Without knowing what is going on, statements such as , "The Kills are not thought to signal a threat to human health." continue to be issued by scientific researchers & testers. As far as I'm concerned you can quote all the tests you want, but these tests really prove little in real terms. Tell me how much testing has been done to the products labled "Organic" that I see every day at local farm stands that I KNOW were irrigated by the same river water that's killing fish! Posted at 8:54AM on Oct 11th 2007 by William Crabill 26. All I can tell you about organic is I have lost 14lbs. from switching to organic foods. That is the only thing I have changed. I even eat nachos and beer! I can see a change in my reluctant 8 year old son's wait. That's all the proof I need. Although a little more grocery money would help! I'm hooked. The only alternative we have found is to grow our own..........and that isnt to bad! Posted at 9:25AM on Oct 11th 2007 by Roy 28. William, isn't the same water also used to irrigate conventional (non-organic) produce? Then the conventional farms add extra chemicals and pesticides. So the organic food is still safer than conventional food from the same region. Posted at 9:36AM on Oct 11th 2007 by Jon 29. What about all the countries that export fruit and vegetables to the USA. Like to kow the pesticide, etc used on those foods: China? Posted at 9:56AM on Oct 11th 2007 by emanon 30. Great info...thanks! However, in my experience, organic bananas keep much longer. They don't turn brown nearly as fast as conventionally grown bananas. I don't know why, but it's the main reason I buy them; I don't have to rush to eat them or freeze them when they turn brown! We're all mutants, some more so than others. Our bodies just have to try to keep up. Posted at 10:29AM on Oct 11th 2007 by Kathi 32. THE REASON CONVENTIONALLY GROWN PRODUCE LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER IN STORES IS BECAUSE FARMERS ARE FORCED TO THROW APPROX. 25% OF WHAT THEY PICK AWAY BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MEET THE SUPERMARKET PERFECTION SCALE NOT BECAUSE OF A SEED. Posted at 10:31AM on Oct 11th 2007 by tom obrien 33. We, as consumers, are not paying the true cost of food due to government subsidies to the industry. In other words, we are cheating Mother Nature out of her services to mankind by paying much less for food. We should buy all our food organic, since that is the true cost of food, aside from it being the ethical action to take for the health of our planet. By choosing to add those extra dollars for all organics instead of spending that little money somewhere else, you are also committing an act of immense charity to the world. Posted at 10:56AM on Oct 11th 2007 by Jacqueline Lopez 34. CORN IS THE MOST GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROP! How can they say it's o.k. to buy conventional? What is more important than what you put into your body? Give up other extras and consume organic at every opportunity. Our system isn't perfect but it's your best chance to avoid being a science experiment with the cocktail of agricultural chemicals that are doused on conventional crops and saturate the soil they grow in, plus the genetic nightmare that is Monsanto's experiment on at least 70% of "conventional" crops. Don't be fooled that ANY of it is o.k. to eat.........it's not. Organic standards again, are not perfect, but the do, in theory anyway, insure that crops are not grown with genetically modified seeds, nor are agricultural chemicals applied. "Conventional" aka "poinsoned" crops have less nutritional value as well, as the soils they are grown in are tremedously chemically treated and largely devoid of natural nutrients. We all have so many chemical exposures and insults to our body. Try to put as pure and nutritious food into your body as possible......it's where you live...don't make it a garbage dump. You'll feel better and live longer and healthier. Posted at 11:04AM on Oct 11th 2007 by Bestloan4u 35. I wouldn't believe anything I read that any of the big agencies put out about food and what is safe or not safe! Just being extra careful...I guess. But as far as bananas I buy mine only organic and by the only company that is "allowed" to sell in the world that is not using fear tactics and slave labor to get them. That leaves Dole and Chiquita out of my shopping cart!If you would like to know more watch Life + Debt (documentary). It made me sick to my stomach. Posted at 11:16AM on Oct 11th 2007 by Lola 36. Cost Of Organic Food. Posted at 11:29AM on Oct 11th 2007 by JD Smith 37. how sad that no one appears concerned about the real reason to "go organic": the environment... not to defend the scientists, but by the time the consumer gets her hands on any fruit or veg, the chemical exposure is non-existent. third-party (usda, etc) audits pretty much prove this... in fact simply washing what you eat solves any "chemical" problem... we should be more concerned about what growers have put in our water table/soil these last 80 years... will they be able to grow anything in CA or FLA in 50 years? methyl bromide injected into the soil so that everyone can have their strawberries year-round? working conditions in the fields (no bathroom facilities, e.g.)? think on these the next time you want to "sample" a grape in the produce dept. Posted at 12:07PM on Oct 11th 2007 by squash 38. I also suggest to save money and don't buy organic milk. Organic milk only means that when a cow is sick it will have to suffer rather than be treated. No antibiotics are allowed to be given to the cow in order to keep the milk organic. In non organic farms antibiotics can be given but the cow's milk is not allowed in the tank until the antibiotics have been cleared of the milk. Meaning after about 3-7 days after the last treatment the antibiotics should no longer be in the cow or the milk so then the milk can go in the tank. Both milks are the same just a healthier cow. Don't drink organic milk unless you don't mind that the California cow behind the scenes may be suffering if it gives organic milk. Posted at 12:11PM on Oct 11th 2007 by Donna 39. It's all a bunch of crap. Have been in the fruit & Veg Business over 30 years. Best advice is to eat seasonal veg stay away from imports, because there are no regulation on pesticide usage in these country's.USA supply is very safe!!! EAT PLENTY OF FRUITS AND VEG AND ENJOY YOUR LIFE! Posted at 12:29PM on Oct 11th 2007 by Joel 40. Organic food is too expensive. Honestly, if I bought organic food all the time I would be flat broke.
