Fabiola Santiago of The Miami Herald offers this review of the documentary La cocina cubana: Secretos de mi abuela (The Cuban Kitchen: Secrets from My Grandmother), which aired this weekend in South Florida.

The article offers an interesting look at the matriarchs of Cuban cuisine—las abuelas, or the grandmothers. In particular, Santiago cites Tessie Vaillant de Yanes, a Cuban grandmother pushing the envelope of traditional Cuban home cooking with dishes such as crepes stuffed with ropa vieja or a black bean cheesecake. Two of Vaillant de Yanes’ recipes are also included.
