Delicious Wish List: More Food HistoryPosted Dec 11th 2005 5:01PM by Nick Vagnoni If you happen to be shopping for a food history buff and you know they've already burned through Mark Kurlansky's Cod and Salt, consider The Pineapple: King of Fruits by Fran Beauman. The Times Literary Supplement recently gave Beauman's fruit biography a very good review, saying "for once, the application of “biography” to an inanimate object seems justified." The book traces the history of the tropical fruit from its once lofty status as something generally only enjoyed by European aristocracy to its descent into the cannery in the 1880s and also to more recent breeding of pineapple hybrids. |
