The Times Literary Supplement recently gave Beauman's fruit biography a very good review, saying "for once, the application of “biography” to an inanimate object seems justified."
The book traces the history of the tropical fruit from its once lofty status as something generally only enjoyed by European aristocracy to its descent into the cannery in the 1880s and also to more recent breeding of pineapple hybrids.
