Do hungry men prefer heavier women?

Posted Aug 2nd 2006 6:02PM by Nick VagnoniFiled under: British Isles, Science, Magazines, Newspapers

Two British researchers have published a study suggesting that hunger may relate to how men perceive different female body types, BBC News reports. The researchers surveyed 61 male college students coming and going from a university dining hall, first asking them how hungry they were and then asking them to rate a series of photographs of similarly dressed women of varying weights and body types. The half of the group that said they were hungry rated heavier women as more attractive, according to the abstract of the study, which appears in the British Journal of Psychology. The researchers now plan on reversing the study to see how hunger affects female perception of male body types.

23. Just wanted to say, that having more weight on your body doesn't make a difference to how you should be perceived. Those people that go out of their way to insult people that have more weight on their bodies are probably neurotic about themselves and are comforted when they say something to hurt another person. I would rather have more energy to burn off than the drawbacks of being a sadist. I mean I am a male and I actually developed a series of eating disorders all because my baby fat would not go away and all my other friends were thin! When in reality all of my "thin" friends have alot of health conditions, which I am sure is from not eating right ,eating foods that have no nutrients, and consuming large amounts of caffiene or various dietary supplements. The result of not eating healthy or enough can be confusion, neuroticism, hypoglycemia, and other various disorders that make it difficult to think. I mean most of the intelligent people never go for the acting or modeling jobs do they? I mean take a good look at the media. Some of these people even have trouble reading their cue cards or holding a pose.

24. To the person in defense of overweight people's proclivity for being unhealthy:

Heart disease and stroke
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Cancer
Gallbladder disease and gallstones
Osteoarthritis
Gout
Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for a short time during sleep) and asthma

These are a list of conditions MORE LIKELY to occur in the obese due to physiological causal connection. The reasons why are obvious, but if you really care to inform yourself and stop romantically idealizing some "health-neutral" stance respective of being overweight due to subjective appreciation and personal bias of their "full shape," there are a slew of medical explanations awaiting. Science is all about identifying links in phenomena where incidences are more likely to occur. As has been documented over the past 50 years in a multitude of studies, a collective averaged incidence of the health problems outlined above are higher in the obese then those of a collective of those not as heavy. Does this mean all overweight people will be afflicted by those issues? No. Science is about prediction up to a point of absolute certaincy, but never as much. It's simply more likely you will suffer a heart attack as the physiological processes governing such traumas are more likely to occur with increased weight. The cholesterol deposited on the coronary and carotid arteries, leading to heart attack, are more likely to occur in the obese who typically suffer from endocrine regulatory deficits limiting the breakdown of the substance--such is the cause of their obesity.

Are the overweight, upon first glance, worthy of being marked a dead man walking at 50? Not necessarily. But, the likelihood is more probable ON AVERAGE. Sure, each individual has his own relative state of health. But, where problems occur more often amongst averages in respect to physiological state, it's easy to believe that obesity IS a problem, in terms of overall health. Each person can treat their body as they wish, but the facts remain, and as has been medicine's aim for the overweight in the past decades, degrees of concern, regardless of whether or not one will actually die of stroke or heart attack, should be taken with much more care in the obese should they not want to chance an early death. This is things as they are.

25. I agree with the survey. If you are hungary, you do not want to look at at a thin person. Bring on the food. I am a 5'7" 180lb black woman and me and my 2 sons and husband eat good. I want my kids to marry someone who can cook and likes to eat also.

26. I agree! I currently weigh somewhere around 215, and I'm healthier now than I was at 135. I don't eat junk food, I actually refuse to buy it. I make much healthier choices than I did back then. So despite the extra weight (which I gained during a problem pregnancy when I was on bed rest), there's nothing wrong with my body or how it functions. And even though the vain part of me would absolutely love to fit into my old high school jeans...I actually feel BETTER now than I did then. Being big doesn't automatically make you unhealthy, I can attest to that, thank you very much, LOL.

27. Maybe it's because they want to eat them and the bigger they are, the more they will satiate their hunger. Who thinks up these surveys??? Stop getting that life long degree studying nonsense and get a REAL job contributing to a worthy cause, like solving world hunger maybe!?!?!

28. Greetings, WOW What an interesting group of persons, i have just read through the many statements you all made and congrats and more congrates...I had open heart in 2000 and guess what there where more skinny's there then men or woman my size........Not telling anyone to use what i said as an excuse to forget about healthy living ...to the lady who said she looked back at her pictures from school days and saw a different person...yes i have recently done so myself....in fact realizing that i am one beautiful woman and was absolutly a knock out when in school...though five feet three inches and 145 lbs was told i was way to fat to be involved in things such as sports etc...so did the stravation thing and the other thing to get down to 125 or less and to stay there. GUESS what --- damage !!!! that has caused and added to my health issues. To the "gentleman" that wrote the long essay I love it it "speaks" great truths.....Wish a bunch of us could get together for a REAL "World Summit" on the realities and truth of life on life's terms and see that we teach "Trust" "Truth" "Honor" & "Respect" NOT ONLY FOR others but for ourselves. Sending you all out there the light and love of best wishes for a good life......sallierose

29. I too was a self-proclaimed "fat advocate" in my younger days. I was healthy, curvaceous and remarkably self confident. Being very active allowed me to maintain weight over 250 pounds without any negative side effects other than social ones -- the stigma our culture attaches to the fat.

However, I must add one caveat: it worked until I got sick once. I had to have a surgery millions of women go through without any real problem and my weight created complications. That part was bad but the true disaster was the loss of activity during recovery. Muscle degrades at an astonishing rate. The amount of time it took to go from an active healthy individual to an extremely weak person who couldn't support her own weight was frighteningly short.

I'm not suggesting this will happen to everyone fat, I'm certainly not saying people should feel badly about themselves or that this in any way justifies treating fat people as undesirables in society. I am, however, pointing out a potential danger to those who believe they're in control. The health warnings are there for a reason and life has a way of tossing you the occasional curveball.

31. I am a woman in her late 20's with 3 kids and a wonderful husband who is still trying to come to terms with her "fatness". I was thin until I started having kids. It seems as though with each child came a little more weight. I am by no means lazy or a junk food junkie. I detest greasy fast food! I'm active taking care of 3 kids. I'm not sitting on my ass eating bon bons watching soap operas all day long. I'm so tired of other people looking at me and assuming that's what my life consists of. People say that being fat is my fault that I chose this. HA! Some of us no matter what we do or eat just seem to be heavier. I just want to be treated with the same respect as the skinny chick standing next to me in the grocery line, and not treated like less then a human being, like if they are friendly to me they might catch my fatness!

32. Wow..some people need to lay off the skinny people. Some just have faster metabolisms, or more self control, than others. I am 5'7, 100 lbs, size 0. I have never been on a diet of any kind, other than being a vegetarian for 6 years. I love junk food--potato chips, candy, etc..I am quite literally addicted to carbs. I love to eat, and I am constantly eating..and only work out just as much as the average person. I am completely healthy, and I hate it when people take one look at me and assume im some anorexic/bulemic chick and get disgusted. Whether fat or skinny, it's just the way some people are and others need to get over it.

34. MAGGIE - I wanted to personally let you know, that you have to stop caring what other people think. Weight is 10 times harder to get off than it is to put on. Ignore the riduculing, the laughter, the 'drama', and just remember that no one can change who you are as a person, and your weight doesnt change you. Get your self esteem up , and get out there. Remember confidence shows, build yours beginning with this... AND WHO CARES ABOUT THIS STUDY, ITS RIDICULOUS, IVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH STUPIDITY!!!!

35. I used to be severly overweight but lost it all (90-100lbs) from Atkins and excersize. Being thin and healthy has allowed me to do more things than I could have ever imagined. Currently I am involved with ballet and am training to go to a University ballet program. I could have never done this if I were my old, obese self. I feel that if a person honestly wants to lose weight, they should and they should be able to find help for it. Being "overwieght" is your choice, as is being "obese", however I feel those who are "obese" to a moderate to severe degree should be urged to make better lifestyle choices.

36. Everything in moderation. Who you are is who you are. I used to be very, very, thin. Now, I am curvaceous. I love myself and I feel that makes me worth being loved. Each person needs to look at himself or herself and decide what makes himself or herself happy. Then, enjoy life in moderation. Thanks for the debate. I loved reading it. :)

37. SKINNYMINI - i JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, SOME DAY YOU WILL HAVE CHILDREN, YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT AND YOU WILL REGRET BEING IGNORANT OF OTHERS FEELINGS. IF YOURE TELLING OTHER PEOPLE TO GET OVER IT, WHY R YOU POSTING A COMMENT? ARE YOU NOT OVER IT? I DONT FIND FAT OR SKINNY APPEALING - WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? - THATS RIGHT - NOTHING.

38. Who are you to point out the truth when you are so blind? Science is not exact and who is to say their generally ambiguous surveys are not singling out certain individuals to obtain the answers they want? I mean if you query hospital databases of conditions that "overweight" people have experienced in the hospital ofcourse the study will show that "overweight" people are prone to certain illnesses because that is the only data they have. Meaning that they have not gone out and added to their data the "overweight" people that have not needed medical attention. Then again, there are "overweight" people that sit around, eat, and do nothing else, which would account for most of those illnesses you listed above and then there are those who are "overweight", exercise, and have never had any sort of health complications. And where are the stats on "average weight" people and their health complications smart guy? These days are the worst. When doctors and dentists become poisoners to perpetuate their trade. The government putting fluoride in our water supply like the nazis did to the Jews to sterilize them and make them docile. Ask your dentist about how safe fluoride and those mercury amalgam fillings are for your health. Consider this statement by the ADA(american dental association) in 1979: "Individual dentists must be convinced that they need not be familiar with scientific reports and field investigations on fluoridation to be effective participants and that non-participation is overt neglect of personal responsibility." There are NO reliable studies, conducted under ethical research guidelines, which prove the benefits of fluoride supplementation. The FDA admits to this! And there are more than 500 peer-reviewed studies documenting the adverse effects of it! Another fun fact is that fluoride is one of the main byproducts of the atomic bomb and industrial production. Way to go for those execs on top! They don't have to pay to get rid of their carcinoginic byproducts they just sell it back to us for us to consume in our water and toothpaste. I mean wy does it say to call the poison center if you swallow too much toothpaste you geniuses? We'll all be like the mad hatter if this keeps up(alice in wonderland reference/hatters used to use mercury to make their hats until they figured out it made people crazy.)

39. What does this exercise in spilled ink prove? Answer: The dolts that ran the study almost assuredly were fishing for a headline, not real science. Ridiculous.
