21. I'm with tr on the Freshman -15. My reason? It was terrible food compared to my family's cooking. I went home and what did I ask for? What really topped the dining hall: corn, rice and chicken baked in cream of chicken soup. The most plain meal we would eat at home simply knocked the snot out of the best the dining hall could come up with. Posted at 4:21PM on Aug 21st 2006 by Robert 22. I went to MIT, and I actually lost about 12 pounds -- because I was mostly too busy to eat. I cured that habit after the first semester, though.... Posted at 4:33PM on Aug 21st 2006 by Kim 23. Ah. I'm only a sophomore in college, and I'm going to do my best not to regain the Freshman 15 that I struggled so hard to lose over the 2nd semester and summmer. First Semester I ate canned chicken noodle soup at least 3 times a week (which loaded me up on so much sodium that my face blew up like a balloon). IHOP was a favorite too and my buddies and I would eat there at least once a week! mmm butter pecan syrup! Posted at 4:57PM on Aug 21st 2006 by Haley 25. I entered college already overweight, but I actually lost about 20 pounds during my freshman year due to walking everywhere, becoming vegetarian, and the terrible food at my school's cafeteria. The following year, I lost another ten pounds after I became vegan. Of course, once I hit age 21 gained back some of that weight thanks to cheap beer and Jager. The dorm food at Ball State was absolutely horrible. There were a few good places to eat but they seemed to be rarely open. Posted at 1:20AM on Aug 22nd 2006 by David T 28. I never did the whole dorm thing, so that wasn't an opportunity to gain weight, but where I did finally gain about 10lbs from was late night studying/cramming/LAN parties fueled by Mt. Dew. Best thing ever, since I had a fresh start in life with new friends. Freshman year, I drank buckets of water every day and ate mostly pasta (individual dehydrated portions). When the beer-loving fest began, we were too busy partying to have 3 meals a day, so it wasn't so hard. Posted at 10:57AM on Aug 22nd 2006 by Jessica 31. Heather, I was also in Europe (Spain) for half of the summer, and I dropped 10 pounds easily. I didn't have to watch what I ate there, it was just that they ate less at meal times. I did not have any fast food either (although I do not eat it too often in the states as a rule). And the walking, you're right... everywhere. I must have walked at least 5-7 miles a day. I also swam 2 or 3 times week. I ate ice cream a half a dozen times, I ate ham, cheese, and bread. Lots of seafood too. I drank wine and rum, among many other things, and it came off without a lot of conscious effort on my part. I am calling it my Spain diet. Maybe the time you spend learning will occupy your mind so much that you won't think about eating. Posted at 2:20PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by Laura 33. I actually lost weight when I went to college! I became involved with theatre as soon as I began and all of the long rehearsals and added activity caused me to lose weight. So...it was quite the opposite! Posted at 2:28PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by jack 34. I actually lived at home for the first two years of college so I didn't gain weight then... I did when I moved away to the University of Nebraska @ Kearney. I lived off campus but my sis and I would go and indulge in breakfast at the cafateria every once and a while. My problem was living on a budget. Cheap foods make you fat...mac and cheese, hamburger helper, tune helper, etc. I gained 20 pound and they had to let my wedding dress (which I bought before moving)out to the seams for my wedding!!!! Weekends consisted of beer, Adriatico's Pizza (I went to OSU) and Funyun binges. Needless to say, I even gained another 10lbs my sophomore year. I finally realized I was spending more money on new clothes I hated than on my late night snacks. Posted at 2:39PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by Kelly 36. I definately gained my freshman "15" from Center Ice and The Rock at Ferris State in Michigan. The schools so called "quality dinning" made it hard to eat healthy when every option was either high carb or fried. Then when I finally got sick of that food it was the dollar menu at McDonalds or the low cost tacos at Taco Bell--Oh and don't forget the $5 pizzas from Little Caesers that lasted 3 days on the weekends! Posted at 2:41PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by Mandy 37. I actually lost weight my freshman year. I was overweight to begin with and I had to walk everywhere. I went up and down 4 flights of stairs to my dorm room about 8 times a day and none of my classes were near my dorm or each other. Coupled with taking 1-2 hour walks almost every day around campus to escape my roommate, I lost about 35 pounds. Posted at 2:48PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by Kara 38. I actually LOST weight when I went off to college. I go to University of Oregon and there are so many great running trails that I started running nearly twice as much as I did in high school. Also, I thought the dorm food was gross, so I lived on grapes and bread that I bought at the grocery store. I went from 120 lbs to 105! Posted at 2:58PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by Steph 39. I had two extremes, personally: moved 2,500 miles away from home (country life to city life), family, friends (anyone I ever knew), and LOST 40 lbs. Ask me to do it again, and I wouldn't even know where to begin.. Posted at 3:04PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by just_a_girl 40. I didn't actually gain any weight Freshman year due to fear of the freshman 15. In fact, I lost weight as a result of intensive workout sessions with my exercise science friends and overscheduling which did not allow me to eat. However, by the time sophmore year had ended I had packed on 20 pounds. I attribute this entirely to, mainly beer, drinking and everything associated with it. Binge beer drinking, late night drunken munchies, and continuous next day hangover eating. Combine this with a serious lack of exercise as a result of harder classes requiring more attention and lethargy from all the drinking (!!), and you have one chubby bunny. Reccommendation - avoid the beer if at all possible! Go for non-sugary mixed drinks or no drinking at all. Eat before you go out so as to avoid late night scarfing as well as hangover! And try to do at least something physical everyday - it makes you feel better and helps with stress as well! Posted at 3:05PM on Aug 22nd 2006 by courtney |
