Officials might ban fast-food restaurantsPosted Sep 11th 2007 12:01PM by Sarah J. Gim In an effort to curb the obesity epidemic in this country, health officials are considering banning fast-food restaurants. They are calling it "health zoning." It sounds like a valiant effort, but will something like Los Angeles City Council's proposed two-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in South L.A., where the adult obesity rate is 10% higher than the national average, really work? Mark Vallianatos, director of the Center for Food and Justice at Occidental College, said "While limiting fast-food restaurants isn't a solution in itself, it's an important piece of the puzzle." He called this kind of legislation "the wave of the future." However, banning the building of new fast food restaurants doesn't seem like it will change habits in the existing environment. Because eating fast food is simply more practical for people, won't they just keep eating unhealthy foods from the restaurants that are already there? |

Short of making exercise and nutrition knowledge mandatory, there is little society can do to prevent adults intent on becoming obsese from doing so. There is, however, a LOT that can and should be done to protect young, impressionable children from being brainwashed into thinking of food the same way they think about clothes and toys. Men dressed as Ronald McDonald visit schools all over the country (and the world) every day, performing "educational" shows about reading, safety, and other topics. But the underlying reason for the visit is to make McDonald's TOP OF MIND with the kids so that after school they will drive their parents crazy to go eat at McDonald's. The latest shows actually have Ronald McDonald teaching kids to "go active", and promotes Ronald as an "amabassador for healthy & balanced lifestyle." Now THAT should be against the law. If kids are taught about the importance of nutrition and exercise beginning at a young age, and we can protect them from marketing influences of fast food until they are old enough to deal with the consequences of obesity, then we may be on to something. Still, it is hard for a child to take advice about eating healthy from a parent, teacher, or other role model who weighs 300 lbs. Posted at 3:51PM on Sep 16th 2007 by jonesmillerboy 45. If law makers want to pass a law that would really work. Why don't they make it unlawful to put additives in the fast food to make people crave more? The more you crave the more you eat, therefore the more you spend. The fast food industry doesn't give two hoots how harmful their food is to the public, as long as they keep spending their money for the food. The government wants to regulate the public, and they should be regulating the companies that produce this stuff in the first place. Just how much of it comes from over seas? What kind of protective regulations are in place in places like China, India, and other places that we receive junk from. The government doesn't care, because all of them can afford better off of our money (their paychecks) than most of us any way. Other countries won't have to take us down with war, cause our government is going to let us all die by allowing all the imports into this country unregulated. If we stopped ALL the imports from coming in, and put OUR factories back on line we wouldn't have any unemployment within two years. Vote ALL encombents out the next election, and let the new ones know if they don't do better they will follow as well. Posted at 3:51PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Kate 46. We all know that fast food is bad for you. Maybe these franchises can come up with a menu with healthy items. I certainly don't want to be told what to eat, but walking around LA these days most of the people (and I mean most) are obesely overweight or on their way. It is absolutely disgusting to see womman and men in tight fitting clothing showing off their cellulite and fat. Trailing behind them are their obese children. When are they going to learn that obese people have a shorter life expectancy. (Children included). Posted at 3:56PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Nancy 47. This is never going to work because of that 'Hamburger Bill'. You can't sue or even touch a fast food place for doing harm to your health, even if you have proof. I don't even eat fast food but you've got to admit it makes you wonder why they even need this bill in the first place. Especially if the food's 'harmless'. You allow people's rights to be taken away because you don't like what they are doing (smoking) and it is the first step to losing something you enjoy. Hahahaha on all of you! Well, Nancy, since obese people disgust you so much, you should be particularly outraged by this legislation. Afterall, the more these disgusting people eat, the faster they'll die off and you won't be forced into feeling all that disgust. I wonder what YOU look like from behind and how many people are feeling disgusted by your ass. Why don't they focus on more fast food and make the companies take the high fat, fillers and junk out of it? It would be nice to eat something and know that it had ingredients that were actually good for me, but if they can kill me with garbage and make a profit, well that's capitalism for you. Reduce the stress and crime in LA and people might find something to do besides eat. Posted at 4:29PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Val 56. It seems to me that the real answer is a question: Why are there no healthy fast-food drive throughs? Why can I drive through and buy a burger and fries, but not be able to buy a black bean patty and a cup of vegetable soup? Why can I drive through and get a bucket of chicken and mashed potatoes, but not get grilled chicken, steamed vegetables and a side of brown rice? Apparently the franchise people think healthy food won't sell. I think they are wrong. Maybe some smart person will open a healthy drive through and end up a billionaire. I have an idea instead of trying to tell us what we can eat and what we can feed our kids how about making stricter laws for pedophiles/sex offenders so that parents can let their kids out to play and maybe these kids could get exercise and not be stuck in the house. It is not safe for kids to be outside anymore and it is because, lawmakers are worried about what we eat instead of making our kids safe so they can go out and quit getting fat. So it is the lawmakers fault we are fat. They are the ones making us so unsafe and over taxed that we go to work 6 or 7 days a week and come home and lock our doors and eat. 41. We elect government officials to help us make a better society. These elected officials are supposed to serve us, not tell us what, when, where, why or how to conduct our lives. People find it more convennient to eat burgers and fries, let them. Next thing you know, our elected officials will be passing laws telling us we have to exercise so many hours each week.
