21. College was great for all the deals you could find. We all knew where the $5 pizza with pitchers of beer for $1.75 could be found, and our athletic tickets offered two-for-one Whoppers after every game. We would eat two each! That made up for the vending machine dinners the rest of the time. No matter how good the dorm food was, we got tired of it. Top Ramen somehow seemed a worthwhile alternative. We found a dollar store that carried huge cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew, and bought out their entire supply. We didn't have a fridge, though, so could only eat when my roomies and I were all hungry (so we wouldn't have to worry about storing leftovers). Pizza with cold cheese - mmmmmmmmmmmmm Posted at 8:48PM on Mar 31st 2006 by roselyn 26. working as a nurse at my first job, with my new apt, I lived on graham crackers ginger ale and cranberry juice (supplied by the hospital). At home I made "hot dog soup' a can of vegetable soup with a hot dog chopped up in it, topped with bacos and parmesan cheese. that was my idea of a nutritious meal. A tip to the Berkeley students: if you stand outside of Raleigh's and wait for someone to get tired of one of those HUGE salads, you can get the rest of it when they leave it ... just a thought. My years at RU in NJ brings back all the NASTY *but at the time conveniant and good* food carts that line College Row (and other places) and lots of parties with stale chip, stale pretzles, stale everything, but I, as well as everyone else still ate it. Please tell us it was not sweet relish in that tuna salad Posted at 8:59PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Terry L Westin 30. Back in the 'olden days' we tosted english muffins and then quick put a slice of american cheese in between two halves, wrapped it back up in the plastic to sort of melt the cheese. I worked in the cafe so a lot of left overs made their way to my room. Posted at 9:01PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Jane 31. Ok,so I went to college in the late 60's. No microwaves, no fridges in the room. We weren't allowed to have hot plates, but we were allowed popcorn poppers. For you young ones, this was a rounded bottom pan that fit in a ring with a heating coil in it. I lived on popcorn until I discovered that I could heat chicken noodle soup and canned spaghetti in the popper. We would put our pop on the ledge outside of the window in the cold months. But as they say those were the days....... Posted at 9:01PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Claudia 32. Oh man, did that bring back memories...but you left out some of the other amazingly fattening foods I used to pig out on at Cal: Posted at 9:01PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Lauren 33. Pizza, pizza, pizza. Order for the late night hunger cravings. Warm it up for breakfast the next day. Yum! Posted at 9:03PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Kris 34. I also went to college a LONG time ago. I went to school in the Midwest at a small, private school. We had a place called Jimmy's that was an all-night diner - you know, the after-party place. The special was called the Little Monster and was eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy. Today my generation calls that the "heart-attack special"!! Posted at 9:04PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Jean 35. I made it through 4 years at Syracuse University on blueberry muffins, orange juice, chicken sandwiches and Vanilla Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Posted at 9:07PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Kathy 36. Twenty years ago, as a student at The Culinary Institute of America, we would drive out of our way for the occasional bologna sandwich! Posted at 9:15PM on Mar 31st 2006 by stephanie 37. Frito pie!! We would split a can of cheap chili and a big bag of cheapy corn chips and top it with Easy Cheese! That was a real treat! Posted at 9:16PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Camby 38. i JUST got out of college a year ago, so i remember the food. the cafeteria was ok, but the meal plan got too expensive so my parents spotted me money and any money i got from work or left over student loan money went into buying food products in bulk. fruit snacks, poptarts, cereal, lil debbie ANYTHING (except twinkies as i have NEVER liked them), the five minute ramen and Hamburger Helper, Chicken Helper and Tuna Helper were my friends. and since i can cook, any other food i got, like beef and chicken was cooked up as well. lots of frying. frying is goooooooood! :) Posted at 9:22PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Devynn 39. mmm. nothing better at 2AM in Chapel Hill than a Greek Grilled Cheese or Bacon Bleu Cheese Burger at Hector's. Now that's some great hangover food! Posted at 9:24PM on Mar 31st 2006 by Susan 40. You guys ate food? We subsisted on mostly beer for dinner...then tab (yes, TAB) for that 8am chemistry class...top ramen wasn't very good, but it did cook well in the little hot pot we could actually have in the dorm. Pizza and subs were also party food. No wonder the pounds packed on.... Posted at 9:29PM on Mar 31st 2006 by marie |
