21. I hate my families heirloom recipes for stollen (gluey and only tastes like yeast), chutney, fruit salad, and an egg casserole. Christmas morning is miserable despite the Mimosas...the only thing that gets me there every year is the promise of Curried Sausage Casserole with mushrooms...divine with scrambled eggs. My family are fabulous, creative cooks...why do they revert to tastelss cookies and other lousy recipes for such a big entertaining holiday when they expose the most people to these dreadful creations?! (On Brussel Sprouts: the shredded/sauteed method does make them bearable...try starting the pan by browning some chopped bacon...everything is better with bacon) Posted at 10:55AM on Dec 15th 2006 by Cary 22. While I prefer regularly rehydrated salt cod to Lutefisk I can tell you that I have had both good and bad Lutefisk with the bad out weighing the good by about twenty five to one. Had it in Norway while on travel in December. Should have known something was up when my hosts said "It doesn't taste as bad as it smells." Bacon bits, bacon grease, and a lot of little glasses of aquavit got me through it. Posted at 12:43PM on Dec 15th 2006 by Dan 25. I can't stand the Starbuck's holiday offerings: peppermint coffee and what the hell is maple drizzle? Scary stuff. Posted at 12:54PM on Dec 15th 2006 by Chris 26. Try pointing her towards Alton Brown's brining recipie and see if you can get her to stuff quartered citris fruit in the cavity instead of stuffing. It makes a world of difference. NPR's Splendid Table has a brining recipie too. Posted at 10:42PM on Dec 15th 2006 by Nicole 28. I failed to mention in my earlier post that I can make an incredible pfeffernusse. I made some for a potluck dinner where I was working. I didn't know that nearly half the employees were from Germany - I'd only worked there for a couple of months. Eat it with your morning coffee or @ night with cocoa, with ice cream melting over it and soaking it, YUM! C'mon how can everyone say they HATE it and it's been around forever! Posted at 6:22AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Sylvia 31. I love MY fruitcake. I make it just after Thanksgiving, using real candied fruit and more nuts than fruit, douse it with rum and wrap it in a rum-soaked cloth and store it in the crisper for a month. It's terrific. Fruit cake is about the worst, my family in Ny swears by fruit cake, seems like they manufacture the crap. every year when we visit my aunt loads us up an ice chest full of it, I do not have the heart to tell her we hate the crap, I take it and feed the raccons all year with it, the mince meat pies are good if done with right. the absolute worst I ever had for xmas one year was when I was in Scotland,I lived there for 2 years amd my X wife was from there, her family made something called a Christmas pudding, it was a bread of some sort and was get wrenching horriable, I took a bite and almost threw up on the table, they were eating it like pigs I dont really know what the ingredients are but I know I never tried that again. Posted at 6:27AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Charles 33. I agree about fruitcake, with the exception of the ones from Mary of Puddin Hill in Greenville, Texas. They are mostly nuts and yummy (they have two kinds, pecan and walnut) they also have bite size ones covered in dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate. Brussel sprouts are usually bitter unless you get the really small ones. A little butter and garlic are great. As for the green bean casserole, try blanched fresh green beans, then saute them in garlic with toasted almonds. Use your imagination when cooking and try it out before the holidays. Most importantly, be thankful for your food, some people will be doing without. Posted at 6:30AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Ann 34. Ha ha ha. Thanks to everyone for giving me a great laugh to start my day with. Posted at 6:31AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Dee 35. Individuals that do not like "fruit cake" have never eaten a good homemade product. I love fruit cake even the old store bought variety that is being passed around the world. Family traditions are what makes the Holiday dishes worth while. We pass on our gooie stollen tradition, who cares what it tastes like. Posted at 6:33AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Hose 36. Spritz cookies: we make these every year... ours are FAR from tasteless, we add lemon or almond, sometimes orange, sometimes chocolate.... its all in the recipie!! Posted at 6:35AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Trish 37. I've had one fruitcake in my whole life that was any good.It came from Dillards and was a tropical fruitcake with pineapple and macadamia nuts and cherries that weren't candied.I hate those.Other than that I hate hate hate fruit cake.Oh!and anything with dates in it.dried dates, date nutrolls ,ect. YUCK!!! Posted at 6:46AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Tracy 38. I have to agree about the yams and green bean casserole and the fruitcakes. I put apple pie filling into my yams and my family loves it. I also make brussel sprouts and mushrooms because my family loves them. You mught try those sometime. I do alot of baking and its not all cookies. Try cakes, puddings etc. Posted at 6:55AM on Dec 21st 2006 by Anne 39. Green bean anything should be outlawed. To the person who posted #19. Thanks for the belly laugh. Great sense of humor. Happy Holidays to all. Posted at 7:04AM on Dec 21st 2006 by carol 40. Ribbon candy will always remind me of Christmas at Grandma's house, with lots of food, family, and fun. I'm not sure how much I liked the candy, but it's a Christmas must! Posted at 7:07AM on Dec 21st 2006 by D15L1 |
