ForesterFiled under: Business, Culinary Kids, Caribbean, America, Soda, Health & MedicalI am a passionate person and tend to get upset when I see targeted marketing to children for non-healthy food and beverage products. The world is getting fat and unhealthy, with our children leading the way; slowly and with a waddle. Diabetes and other weight and diet related health problems are increasing dramatically. Soda is believed to be one of the culprits. Our schools are fighting to get them out, and to keep our kids away from them, so they can drink healthy. Today at a food show I ran across Chubby Soda and shuddered. It comes in neon colors and in a small, cute, chubby looking 8oz bottle. The calories range from 110-140 per bottle; Pepsi has 100 and Coke 105 for the same amount so some of these are pretty darn sweet sodas. The logo is of a chubby boy dancing with glee and clutching a bottle of Chubby Soda in his outstretched hand. I looked closer at the bottle and saw the name of the website and was revolted.www.ChubbyKidsclub.com Chubby Kids Club? What the heck does that mean?What is this company thinking? They even brag on their website about how one of the companies "Firsts" is "1993 - first in the world to market a carbonated soft drink targeted specifically to children – Chubby." The company makes a big point on the site of showing that they are environmentally friendly and donate money and soda to charities and events. I guess they have to find some way to salve their conscience about their horrible targeting towards children, and chubby ones at that. Then I see lower down on the "Firsts" page of the site that "1998- Chubby, is the first Caribbean brand to be franchised by a large multinational corporation - the COTT Corporation." You know, the company whose slogan is "It's Cott to be good." Is this the same Cott's that introduced the supposedly healthy, low sugar, vitamin fortified beverage products co-branded with Disney and Pixar? What's going on? Am I going overboard here? I don't know, but would like to hear what you folks have to say.
