Easy Cheese, entertainment for kids of all agesPosted Apr 11th 2006 3:30PM by Heather CravenFiled under: Snacks, Dairy, Cheese, Culinary Kids, Food Oddities, Condiments, Comfort FoodAlthough it goes against just about every parenting instinct I possess, sometimes the allure of a can of Easy Cheese is just too much to resist. Easy Cheese has almost no redeeming qualities whatsoever, except that it entertains my children for as long as there is goo in the can. I am not sure exactly what Easy Cheese truly is, anything dairy that can indefinitely remain under pressure and at room temperature has got to be suspicious. But my kids love it and from time to time I succumb to the grocery store yah-yahing, temporarily lose all cognitive functions and agree to purchase a can. I do this because I know that for as long as the contents last, my children will be busily squirting out the orange paste and happily lapping it off of any surface they deem fit. Today I broke down and bought a can for my daughter, who thought Easter had come
early when I agreed to this. However, as I mulled it over in the cracker aisle while I envisioned that horrid
concoction going into her little body, I decided to make a project of it. We grabbed a box of Wheat Thins, a compromise
on her part to Ritz crackers, and decided to have an Easy Cheese Art Contest. I was envisioning an Eiffel Tower or a
Frank Loyd Wright structure. The Easy Cheese actually makes a fine foundation, it's thick and just pliable enough to
add support. But it was our choice of Wheat Thins for the basic building material that set us awry, they are too thin
and many are broken. My daughter was able to create a lovely snake and a daisy. While I opted for what I thought might be the Sydney Opera
House. When all was said and done we were both sick of Easy Cheese and ready to move on to a different project. It was
good, cheap entertainment and I believe she is sated for at least a few months.
