Which flavor should I make in my new Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker?!?!

Posted Aug 23rd 2007 1:25PM by Sarah J. GimFiled under: Dessert, Dairy, Fruit, Sugar

I got an ice cream maker for my birthday this summer. I have no idea what possessed me to ask for one, since I very rarely eat ice cream anymore, but I did. Now I have one and I love it. The gorgeous, shiny thing is sitting on my countertop.As soon as I got it, I made vanilla ice cream. I have, my friends, now mastered vanilla ice cream. The question now, however, is what flavor should I make next? I have though about sticking with basics like chocolate or strawberry, but isn't that boring? I have to be choosy because I can't make a lot of ice cream - my freezer is already overflowing with other stuff, and like I said, there's only so much ice cream I can eat. So, Slashfoodies, what should I make? If you have a favorite recipe, let me know!

21. Sarah your cruel words mock the rest of us who do not have a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker. I am forced to like ice cubes out of my freezer and only imagine how good ice cream tastes.

I feel so empty inside.

22. I am so jealous.

I still have the electric kind you have to put ice around. But I have many fond memories of making peach ice cream in the summers as a kid, so that's what I'd recommend.

A shortcut is to just add a couple of jars of peach jam (homemade is best) to a vanilla ice cream recipe.

23. Definitely boysenberry, the best fruit in the world.

24. A spicy strawberry - simmer a strawberry coulis on the stove top with a dash of balsamic and some fresh chiles or red pepper flakes. Strain, cool, and add to your ice cream mixer.

27. David Lebovitz's Malted Milk Ice Cream. People moan when they eat this. When I make ice cream I always pack it in 8oz containers (usually get 4 a batch), then give 3 away. NO WAY I want all that ice cream around me.

31. with fall aproaching, perhaps something like a baklava ice cream (or better yet, frozen yogurt) might be appealing? perhaps making the cinnamon and clove flavored honey syrup swirl through a pistachio or pecan ice cream with broken bits of crumbled puff pastry?

It's been one i've always wanted to try myself.

If not that, perhaps playing with various fruit and herb combinations, like lemon and thyme, for something somewhat classic, yet different.

34. Make vanilla ice-cream and add chopped dried apricots, crushed Amaretti biscuits and flaked almonds. Voila: pleasantly alliterative Apricot, Almond and Amaretti ice-cream. You can add a dash of Amaretto too. It's so good I can't even put it into words.

36. I second the Perfect Scoop recommendations, and particularly the frozen yogurt that appeared on 101cookbooks not long ago. Very basic, very interesting (if you like tangy yogurt, that is), including only yogurt, sugar, and vanilla if you like. I used honey instead of sugar, and no vanilla, and it was a very tasty experiment!

37. Take that green tea from the first page and add raspberries to it at the end. Sounds nuts but its delicious. Big fan of your main/home blog!

38. There is a wonderful new book of recipes that offer different flavored ice cream cones to match with all of the new flavors of ice cream you are making. If interested go to icecreamjunkines.com. Any simple vanilla ice cream will match up nicely with a gingerbread cookie cone, for example. There's nothing better than a freshly made crispy cone.

40. I had rosemary ice cream a couple of weeks ago at a nice French restaraunt in Atlanta (Les Fleur de Lis). I don't know how they did it, but the flavor was amazing.

Another fun ice cream would be garlic ice cream, which I always had as a kid at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, CA. Surprisingly, it's pretty good.
