21. The worst lunch at my elementary school had to be something they called "hot roast beef sandwich". It bore absolutely no resemblance to roast beef. Looking back now, I'm sure it was WWII surplus canned beef. (That really dates my schooldays!) My brother took one look at it and christened it "camel snot". The name stuck and became widespread. My stomach lurches just remembering it. 22. My go-to lunch when I was in highschool (early 1990's) was a sourdough sandwich roll dipped in a cup of ranch dressing. The grocery store acrosss the street sold this combo for $1 to many a poor student looking for something cheap and filling. How innocent we were back then... 23. Oh and from my elementary school days, the 'chicken' nuggets would have to take the cake for the worst of the worse. They were perfectly round and had the consistency of hard rubber, making them perfect for nugget racing or nugget hockey. 24. @Frances : What I learned as a kid with those clumps in the chocolate milk, is when you stick your finger in the milk for about 10 seconds the clumps will all stick to your finger. David Copperfielded the nasty clumps.. 25. I think the worst school lunch items that kids are eating include red meat items like hamburgers and hot dogs, candy, cakes, ice cream, potato chips and soda that are not nutritionally good for them. How about this for a lunch, a grilled chicken sandwich on whole wheat bread, whole wheat crackers, an orange, grapes, melon slices or an apple, a vanilla pudding cup and a bottle of water or a small carton of milk. No chocolate either for heaven's sake! Mmmmmmmm! 26. Ah, but for those of us with iron constitutions this food could clean up day - I was not called the human vacuum cleaner for nuthin.....liver was truly a great day. 27. Mr. Sassone,May I suggest you try going several months not knowing whether or not your blessed enough to enjoy a "lunch" 5 days a week. With all do respect, your memories of lousy lunches will deminish completely. 28. Does anyone remember the "NO BAKED" dessert? I beleive it was oatmeal flakes covered with chocolate, then mushed down to look like a cookie! 29. Sauerkraut was the worst. In my high school cafeteria they made a sauerkraut that smelled so bad I didn't even want to be in the building let alone go into the lunch room. It was actually traumatic how bad that stuff stank. To this day 42 years later when someone even mentions sauerkraut I want to be somewhere else. They had it often too, cause it's cheap. I think sauerkraut is Hitler's revenge for losing WW2. 30. i think the fried chicken was like "the worst" 31. in grammar school the food was bad to average the french fries weren't cook all the way,sometimes one day we'll have sloppy joes then next day we mite have tacos or nachos.the only good food was the nachos,pizza,tacos,hamburgers,and chicken.when i got to high school the food is average and sometimes good 32. I work in a cafe. of a local high school. We serve very good lunches every day. but the kids all just want a chicken sandwich and fries. I think they would die if they could not have fries every day. but you have to realize that most of them only have a dollar to spend and that is how much an order of fries cost. Especially around friday ,(date nite) or as prom nite gets closer. Or if they have a car. Sometimes they tell me that they had to get gas for the car and they only have a dollar for lunch, even if they are working. 33. Well reading these comments remind me of my 8th grade Washington D.C trip. On our last day in Gettysburg, we all stopped at this one buffet. The food there was awful. The water or whatever they served smelled and tasted to Windex, you could drink the turkey and the rolls were harder than wood(Literally, my friend banged the roll against our wooden table and the table lost). Oh but here comes dessert. The "cake" tasted like chocolate with mystery MEAT mixed in it. The frosting on top, you could tip the cake over and it would slide right off then you could pick it back up and place it exactly how it was again. Sickening 34. Yes, how well I remember the Spanish rice days..Ithink it was on a Tuesday..also the cheese souffle day..ugh..only the teachers gagged that stuff down. 35. We had great school lunches in the 60's. No soda machines that I could remember, everyone drank milk or juice. They had a fab pizza made on half a hamburger bun that I crave to this day and high hunks of cake with marshmallow icing. 36. Does anyone remeber those chocolate coconut cookie balls? I would like the recipe. 37. I think the happiest day of my school life was when it was found out I was allergic to milk and got to be one of the "lucky" kids who got to drink orange juice with lunch! 38. I think the worst food being served right now is the beef stroganoff look-a-like. It looks ike someone vomited it up and served it. Tastes like it too. UGH..... 39. As a junior high teacher, I enjoyed immensely all of these comments!! I haven't thought of square pizza or porcupine meatballs in, like, forever! I remember the beanie weanies were pretty gross at my school, but most of their food was actually pretty decent. The school I teach at now is so lazy they actually serve pre-packaged peanut butter sandwiches. How hard are those to make?! Of course, these have the crusts cut off...spoiled kids! 40. What about tater tots???? GROSS at school....ALWAYS undercooked!!! |
