Back to School: Battle of the Peanut Butters

Even with all the media surrounding peanut allergies in kids, peanut butter still remains tops when it comes to sandwiches. Newsday put the eternal question to the test with 11 kids and got the answer to "What is the best peanut butter?" They tested 16 brands of peanut butter including store brands like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and also controlled for crunchy and creamy preferences by testing them separately. So who won out? As much as parents would love to have kids prefer natural peanut butters, national brand Skippy took first place in both creamy and crunchy categories, followed closely by Peter Pan and then Jif. For the full results, and more information about peanut butter in general, check out the Newsday article.

21. Try Stop & Shop peanut butter. For a store brand, it's even better than the number one Skippy!

22. Smucker's Organic is our family's choice. Organic is better since there are no pesticides and no horrible for you palm oil, cottonseed oil or rapeseed oil. Yes, it's a bit of a pain to stir the oil in when it's first opened, but after it's refrigerated it never has to be done again. Be careful to read labels when buying organic as some brands have added palm oil in.

23. Foods are a personal choice. If you want to eat healthy, read the labels and select brands with the highest nutritional values and which contain the least amount of "negative" ingredients. If taste is your only concern, buy what you like. Don't buy a product because the majority of people like the way it tastes. And don't be fooled into thinking that the more an item costs, the better it tastes or the better it is for you. Often the difference between the higher priced item and the lower priced item is the amount of change you receive.

28. The teaser headline says "Which Peanut Butter Is Best?" and the article tells us how CHILDREN rated the latest brands. What's wrong with this picture?

32. ZUE - I think you got some bad information - CANOLA oil AKA Rapeseed Oil is one of the most heart healthy oils available.

33. I have to say that we also buy the natural butters. I usually by them at Sprouts or Central Market. We buy almond butter, cashew butter, and peanut butter. I have to admit I prefer them w/ a little salt added. I have tried the Tahini butter, but just don't care for it.
I also keep a jar of store brand around for some baking purposes.
Also, we have a diabetic beagle, and we keep a jar of creamy, no salt, natural pb for her in the fridge. lol It's about the only treat she is allowed besides 1 special diet dog treat a day. She has a hard plastic "fire Hydrant" that is hollow in the middle that you fill w/ PB. She gets real excited when she sees you fill it up.

34. Now there are peanut butter wars??? Hey, just buy a jar of the stuff,
dig in and enjoy! We don't need to make special trips to the health
food store for every d*mned mouthful of food we eat. Soy butter? UGH! If I'm going to eat peanut butter, then I'm going to eat peanut butter! I'm not going to waste my time searching out all these weird jars of your particular poison. What brand of peanut butter is on sale this week at the supermarket? That's what I'll be buying!

35. If you take a look at JIF vs the other brands, it is the only one with molasses which helps in digesting. If you don't use JIF you're tearing up your GI tract.

36. Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter with Honey.

It has four ingredients: peanuts, honey, sugar, salt.

I've personally added a fifth ingredient: pure deliciousness.

37. JIF ONLY!

38. Laura Scudders Old-Fashioned Super-Chunk Peanut Butter. The label actually reads: "Ingredients: peanuts and salt. That's all." No guesswork here, people.

39. A simple food item like peanut butter isn't so simple after all. There is much to learn about the different familiar brands of peanut butters and some we haven't heard about. I'm going to check the shelves more carefully at the market next time I need some. I'm still a kid at heart. I love a peanut butter & jelly sandwich.

40. Love Smucker's Natural Chunky. Why would anyone need to add anything but peanuts to peanut butter? I like to pour off most of the oil that sits on the top when the jar is first opened, then mix the nuts into the peanut butter and store it in the frig to keep it from separating.
Once you acquire the taste for the "real deal" the stuff with sugar is disgusting. Our dog gets Smucker's Natural Creamy.
