The call for better hospital foodPosted Sep 21st 2005 1:03PM by Deidre Woollard Hospital food is, for the most part, notoriously bad. Now a physicians' organization is calling on U.S. hospitals to try and change that by offering healthier dining options. Often the place that is supposed to make people well serves food that is unhealthy. According to this article, a survey by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine found less than one-third of hospitals offer either a salad bar or a daily low-fat, cholesterol-free entree. In the cafeterias, high-fat foods, such as fried chicken, pizza and enchiladas, are top sellers. Hospitals are trying to offer some healthy foods but according to the survey there is room for improvement. Nearly every hospital has a nutritionist or two on staff but the aren't often involved in food-purchasing decisions. The organization says hospitals should try to include healthier options including multi-grains, beans and soy and that ideally hospitals should offer low fat, high fiber meals that reflect healthy eating choices. |
