Officials might ban fast-food restaurantsPosted Sep 11th 2007 12:01PM by Sarah J. Gim In an effort to curb the obesity epidemic in this country, health officials are considering banning fast-food restaurants. They are calling it "health zoning." It sounds like a valiant effort, but will something like Los Angeles City Council's proposed two-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in South L.A., where the adult obesity rate is 10% higher than the national average, really work? Mark Vallianatos, director of the Center for Food and Justice at Occidental College, said "While limiting fast-food restaurants isn't a solution in itself, it's an important piece of the puzzle." He called this kind of legislation "the wave of the future." However, banning the building of new fast food restaurants doesn't seem like it will change habits in the existing environment. Because eating fast food is simply more practical for people, won't they just keep eating unhealthy foods from the restaurants that are already there? |

As far as "nobody has time to cook" - that's hogwash - all you have to do is spend a couple of hours one day a week cooking various main courses and freezing them in individual portions. Mealtime comes, thaw some out, add a salad and/or a vegetable, maybe some brown rice (which also freezes well, btw) and you have a quick and nutritious meal. Takes some planning, but it's healthier and cheaper than McD's drivethru! Posted at 2:56PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Suzanne 23. What if it worked. Would you support it then? What about Fast healthy food? They don't have to be mutuallly exclusive. There is an economic benefit from having less obese people. We shouldn't be supportive of fast food restarants making people who cant afford to eat healthier fat. We end up paying higher insurance premiums for them. Maybe this is responsible goernment policy. If you live in the Coachella Valley area in Southern California then you know Indian Wells...zero fast food in the city. Only a couple high end restaurants and that's it. Palm Desert, just next door, did away with DRIVE THRU's...you can have McD's, but you have to park and walk in to do it. Zoning it out completely isn't a bad idea, making you walk to get it, better. Drive thrus, though convenient (and i have kids so i live by the drive in concept) really does end up taking away just one more reason to get up and move. Making it more difficult to get to, it won't hurt sales by any means, but if you have to drive past 3 grocery stores just to get to that greasy hamburger you either really want it or really don't feel like cooking. Since I moved to Palm Desert 9 years ago i've found that the only time i will get fast food is if we are driving past it or going out of town. that's it. much better than the old days where we'd have it 2-3 times a week just becuz i was too tired to cook. Many people when given the option of stopping by a burger joint on their way home for dinner, or taking the bus an hour out of their way and riding the bus back with a dozen bags will gladly take the option of the burger joint. Hopefully, this will encourgage grocery stores to invest in these areas. Posted at 3:20PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Colleen 32. Last time I checked, Ronald McDonald was not sitting on my chest shoving french fries down my throat. If I choose to eat fast food I have that right. Please do not let any government try to tell us what is good for us! We are not simple minded children that need to be prtected from ourselves! I am NOT overweight, I eat fast food, I do excercise, but also watch tv and play on the computer. It's a matter of moderation. Posted at 3:21PM on Sep 16th 2007 by sheri 33. It's not just the republicans. John Edwards wants to make invasive health-care screenings mandatory. Here's proof: Posted at 3:23PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Lola 34. For those of you who think the ban can't happen, remember the dictator of NYC banning smoking in all establishments. Now he wants to regulate the way all food is cooked in the city, using no trans fat. How dare he regulate how restaurants prepare their food! I can't believe that such a large and diverse population is letting him get away with it. And the f*cked up town in Maryland where you can't even smoke in your OWN HOME if a neighbor complains that they can smell your smoke - and the ban on bottled water in San Francisco government offices. I just recently started drinking bottled water because our tap water tastes like grass and dirt. Hope their water tastes better than mine! I personally don't eat the junk myself but those who have very little money can only afford this food. Maybe if the fast food industry will find better ways to make fast food healthier and notice the amount of fat their product has then maybe they will seek an alterative to what they sell. This was before they had fast food breakfasts, and our families couldn't afford to eat fast food much. Her family, hispanic like the South Central residents, were all grossly overweight. When I slept over at her house, the breakfasts were unbelievable. Everything was cooked in pools of lard. Eggs, ham or big chunks of baloney, potatoes, etc. etc. They didn't need fast food to be ginormously fat. Posted at 3:36PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Lisa 39. The biggest problem with fast food, is the fact that there are additives that make you hungry all the time. This makes you crave more, therefore you spend more money. Why doesn't the FDA put a stop the practice, therefore elemnating the biggest problem with fast food. Posted at 3:37PM on Sep 16th 2007 by Kate 40. OK big brother, chip away at our freedoms!! 21. Personally, its a good idea! Sorry that some of you might not like to hear that because you put nothing but shit in your bodies! Trust me, I used to eat fast food too... until I realized that even SALADS at fast food places are just as bad as a triple bacon cheeseburger whatever... its DISGUSTING. I can't believe people would put that shit in their bodies, the thought makes me sick now.
Get rid of fast food or make it HEALTHY...
And I dont care if you say "its up to us what we eat" I personally, dont eat it, so honestly, i dont give a shit what you put in your mouth, I avoid it.. but people, come on, do you not care about yourself?
