21. What you don't say is that the reason for obesity as it is linked directly to poverty. It would be great if America could take care of their own. You know that a basic Christian value is that Charity begins at home. Posted at 8:44PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Joyce 22. Living in the neighboring state of LA, I can certainly believe those figures. Food here is just so darned good, it's really difficult not to be tempted to overindulge, and every occasion is another excuse to eat! Wondering, though, Mark (#5), just how high are taxes in MA? Ours is a whopping 9% down here, and that really hurts, since wages are among the lowest. Yes, #2...we need their prayers, don't we? Posted at 8:51PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Martha 23. Just eat, drink, and be merry! Come on down South and eat you a big fat steak with a baked potato stuffed with real butter, bacon, and chives. Hot rolls too dripping in butter. YUM! If you want rice cakes, yogurt, and sprouts and that makes you feel good go for it, we're all going to die eventually. If I lose two or three years eating steak etc., I'll take it. These statistics are sad yet not surprising. Looking at the states if I could have ranked them before seeing the percentages, it wouldnt have been far off because wellness is more prevalent in the thinner areas. It is a programming and lifestyle issue. In the obese states people eat in huge proportions and they eat ALL of the pig and ALL of the cow and don't exercise. Especially in the black community. I know growing up the last 22 years in VA I have been programmed to clean my plate and eat until I'm full. And with parents working and coming home, their lifestyle is one that craves fast food. Fried chicken, cheeseburgers, soda, fries, etc. What we need is a method of reprogramming the mindsets of the people in these states thru the media, other national leaders, and most importantly the school system. I remember 5 years ago in highschool all most people ate daily was pizza, fries, cookies, and soda or either candy and soda... WHAT KIND OF PROGRAMMING IS THAT???? Posted at 8:52PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Mike 26. southern cooking.....yeah we can't cook up here. Ever see that cooking show on the food channel. The southern one, Paula something. She puts 1LB of butter in everything she cooks. Real healthy, no wonder she's fat and looks like a house. Misery loves company. Posted at 8:54PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Sal 27. The Northern States have their Mexican food too. It's called Alpo with pepper sauce. They have to migrate to the South to get decent food.. Posted at 8:54PM on Aug 15th 2006 by XD.45 28. High heat and humidity keep people inside through the warm months. They're trying to survive. How much of the workforce works in air conditioning? At the end of the day people don't want to beat themselves about in a wet blast furnace to get healthier. They want to go home, cool off for the last time that day, and have dinner. A perfectly healthy attorney I knew was mowing his lawn and died of heat stroke. Many of us in the lower South live for fall and winter. Only six months of the year are pleasant, and with global warming, the situation is exacerbated. December is the most pleasant month of the year in south Alabama, and it's not just because of the holidays. Posted at 8:54PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Caitlin Marks 29. People in the intermountain states can attribute their lower incidence of obesity to lifestyle. In Colorado we spend alot of time outdoors hiking, golfing, etc. Contrary to the notion that it snows here alot and often, we enjoy what is probably the best weather in the continental U.S. which enables us to spend a substantial amount of our free time in pursuit of outdoor recreation! Posted at 8:54PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Robert 30. I'm from Colorado. Low property taxes and low obesity rate. Gotta love it. Don't tell anyone about our great weather though, or everyone will want to live here. Posted at 8:55PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Rich 31. Ok....to settle the confusion..and even the article got it wrong...Hawaii is in 2nd Place..but no percentage is given...but it is light green. Posted at 8:55PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Matt 32. A higher altitude will cause your body to burn more calories...Maybe we should all flee to the mountains. Posted at 8:59PM on Aug 15th 2006 by judy 34. Not surprising...... Posted at 8:59PM on Aug 15th 2006 by James 35. I HAVE TO AGREE WITH #16'S POST. I AM FROM BILOXI MS, AND I THINK THE FACT THAT THE FOOD HERE HAS SUCH A BROAD CULTURAL INFLUNCE FROM REGIONS KNOWN FOR DELICIOUS DISHES. HERE, WE DONT JUST EAT OUT FOR NOURISHMENT, BUT ALSO TO SAVOR THE TASTE OF FOODS WITH LOTS OF CAJUN AND SPANISH INFLUENCES. THESE DELICIOUS DISHES MAKE IT HARD TO RESIST THE URGE TO OVER INDULGE. Posted at 9:01PM on Aug 15th 2006 by BILLY 36. To the person that said that only unhealthy food is affordable...thats a crock of nonsense and an ignorant comment to make. At McDonalds, you can get an order of fries for 1 dollar. You can spend that same dollar at a supermarket for an orange (or two, or three, or four) or a few apples, or a few carrots, and get the same amount of calories (I'm guessing) and eat a whole lot healthier. You can even buy a can of tuna or something, if you need your "meat" or some turkey, or chicken breast slices, for the same price, and still get full and not destroy your arterys and such. Posted at 9:04PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Double H 37. Ummmm could someone pass the butter? Posted at 9:05PM on Aug 15th 2006 by T 38. And I left out DC, because it is technically not a state, but if added, it would be ranked 12th..and everything after that would shift up one. As for the excuses people are giving about being fat.....ridiculous. Everyone has the option to visit McDonald's and get a Big Mac...or make yourself a salad or a chicken breast. But hey, you can also buy a salad at McDonald's. While you are there, say NO to the fries. But the main thing with diet...is knowledge. People are told so many things in articles, tv shows, commercials, etc. that all contradict each other. Get the knowledge, eat the right foods, and exercise daily. Take the stairs...park further away than usual...walk the dog..etc. It is all in your head and what you are willing to do. Don't blame anything or anyone else, but yourself. Later. Posted at 9:07PM on Aug 15th 2006 by Matt 39. Knowing "How to cook" would include providing your family with tasty but nutritious meals. Perhaps that is why the southern states have such high obesity rates. Slathering high fat, hormone ridden meats with gravy does not constitute a healthy meal. You arent showing yourself any respect or your family any love by endangering their health with poor food choices. Most of what we learned as children, from previous generations about nutrition is incorrect and people need to take the initiative to research and learn and do what is best. You control your own health,no-one else is out for your best interest, only your $$$$$$$! Posted at 9:07PM on Aug 15th 2006 by mel 40. How accurate are these studies? Do we care how accurate they are? So far the southern folks have spoken about their high cal, high fat cooking. It is true that we all are going to go sooner or later, but if I have a vote, I'll take later.
